Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system is provided for communicating between a 3D metrology instrument and a portable computing device via near field communications. In one embodiment, the metrology device is an articulated coordinate measurement machine (AACMM), a laser tracker, a laser scanner or a triangulation scanner, and the portable communications device is a cellular phone or a tablet. The portable device may use the NFC to determine the configuration of and to configure the metrology instrument.

I claim: 1. A method comprising: providing a metrology device having a housing, a measurement device operably coupled to the housing, the measurement device configured to measure an object, the metrology device having a first wireless communications device having a first antenna, an electric circuit and a first memory, the first wireless communications device configured to modulate an operating field generated by an external device via inductive coupling with respect to the external device, when the external device is within a first distance of the antenna, the metrology device still further having an electronic processing system operably coupled to the measurement device and the first wireless communications device, the electronic processing system being configured to determine 3D coordinates of at least one point on the object in response to a measurement by the measurement device; providing a portable computing device having a processor, a second memory, a transmitter, and a receiver; storing in the first memory a device data; transmitting the operating field with the transmitter; moving the portable computing device to a second distance that is less than or equal to the first distance from the first antenna; receiving the operating field with the first antenna; receiving at the electric circuit a first signal from the first antenna in response to receiving the operating field; retrieving the device data from the first memory; modulating the operating field with the first antenna to transmit the device data to the receiver; and storing the first set of device data in the second memory. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the device data includes an encoder identification number. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the first wireless communications device is coupled to a first rotary encoder. 4. The method of claim 3 further comprising: providing a second rotary encoder, the second rotary encoder having a second wireless communications device having a second antenna, a second logic circuit and a third memory; performing a service activity on the metrology device, the service activity including replacing the first rotary encoder with the second rotary encoder; transmitting with the transmitter the encoder identification number to the second wireless communications circuit; and storing the encoder identification number in the third memory. 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the second rotary encoder is coupled for communication to the electronic processing system. 6. The method of claim 5 further comprising transmitting a signal from the second rotary encoder to the electronic data processing system. 7. The method of claim 6 further comprising determining 3D coordinates for at least one point on the object with the electronic processing system in response a measurement by the measurement device. 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the determination of the 3D coordinates are determined based at least in part on the signal from the second rotary encoder. 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the signal includes at least the encoder identification number. 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the metrology device includes a plurality of rotary encoders, each of the rotary encoders having a different encoder identification number. 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the metrology device is an articulated arm coordinate measurement machine (AACMM). 12. The method of claim 10 wherein the metrology device is a laser scanner. 13. The method of claim 10 wherein the metrology device is a laser tracker. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein the device data includes at least one of a serial number, a configuration data or a revision data. 15. A metrology device comprising: a housing; a measurement device operably coupled to the housing and configured to measure an object; a wireless communications device operably coupled to the housing, the wireless communications device having an antenna, an electrical circuit and a first memory, the electrical circuit and the antenna being configured to cooperate to modulate an operating field generated by an external device via inductive coupling with respect to the external device, wherein the electrical circuit is configured to receive a first data from the external device and store the received first data in the first memory, the electrical circuit further configured to transmit a device data to the external device through the modulation of the operating field; an electronic processing system operably coupled to the measurement device, the electronic processing system being configured to determine three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of at least one point on a surface of the object based at least in part on a measurement of the object by the measurement device. 16. The metrology device of claim 15 wherein the device data includes an encoder identification number. 17. The metrology device of claim 16 wherein the wireless communications device is coupled to a first rotary encoder. 18. The metrology device of claim 17 wherein the first rotary encoder is removably coupled to the metrology device. 19. The metrology device of claim 17 wherein the first rotary encoder is configured to transmit a signal to the electronic processing system, the signal including the encoder identification number. 20. The metrology device of claim 19 wherein the metrology device is an articulated arm coordinate measurement machine.
