Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A deflectable catheter shaft section is disclosed comprising an elongated body extending along a longitudinal axis and comprising a distal end and a proximal end; and a plurality of lumens extending along the longitudinal axis of the elongated body, wherein at least one of the lumens is abutting at least another one of the lumens. A catheter comprising the deflectable catheter shaft section and a method of manufacturing the deflectable catheter shaft section are also disclosed. A catheter incorporating a deflectable catheter shaft section can further comprise first and second compression coils disposed over pull wires located within the catheter, wherein the compression coils are unattached to the catheter or components thereof, but can be constrained by a shaft coupler at a distal end of each of the compression coils and by at least a portion of a handle assembly at a proximal end of each of the compression coils.

What is claimed is: 1. A deflectable catheter shaft section comprising the following: an elongated body extending along a body longitudinal axis and comprising a distal end and a proximal end; a first pocket at said distal end of said elongated body and attached to a pull ring within the first pocket and a tip assembly, wherein the first pocket extends from a proximal end of the pull ring to the distal end of the elongated body; a second pocket at said proximal end of said elongated body; and a shaft coupler mounted in said second pocket, wherein said shaft coupler defines a coupler longitudinal axis aligned with said body longitudinal axis, and wherein said shaft coupler defines (a) a plurality of coupler lumens extending along said coupler longitudinal axis and (b) an outer radial surface defining a groove. 2. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 1 further comprising a tip assembly affixed in said first pocket. 3. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of coupler lumens further comprises the following: diametrically-opposed first and second pull wire lumens, each pull wire lumen extending substantially parallel to said coupler longitudinal axis; and diametrically-opposed first and second larger lumens, each larger lumen extending substantially parallel to said coupler longitudinal axis. 4. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 3 , wherein said first and second pull wire lumens are symmetrically disposed on either side of a first longitudinally-extending plane bisecting said shaft coupler into a first hemicylindrical portion and a second hemicylindrical portion. 5. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 4 , wherein said first and second larger lumens are symmetrically disposed on either side of a second longitudinally-extending plane bisecting said shaft coupler into a third hemicylindrical portion and a fourth hemicylindrical portion, and wherein said first longitudinally-extending plane is rotated 90 degrees relative to said second longitudinally-extending plane. 6. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 1 , wherein said groove on said outer radial surface of said shaft coupler is selected from the group consisting of (1) a helical groove extending from a first longitudinal end of said shaft coupler to a second longitudinal end of said shaft coupler and (2) a plurality of separate, circumferentially-extending recesses arranged along said outer radial surface of said shaft coupler between said first longitudinal end of said shaft coupler to said second longitudinal end of said shaft coupler. 7. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 6 further comprising a longitudinally extending trough on said outer radial surface of said shaft coupler. 8. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of shaft lumens extending along said body longitudinal axis, wherein at least one of said plurality of shaft lumens is abutting at least another one of said plurality of shaft lumens. 9. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 8 , further comprising a plurality of liners corresponding to each of said plurality of shaft lumens, wherein each of said plurality of liners is comprised of polytetrafluoroethylene. 10. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 1 further comprising a bendable stiffening member positioned adjacent a distal portion of said shaft coupler and configured to fit around a pull wire. 11. A catheter shaft comprising the following: a deflectable catheter shaft section extending along a body longitudinal axis and comprising a distal end and a proximal end; a first pocket at said distal end of said deflectable catheter shaft section and attached to a pull ring within the first pocket and a tip assembly, wherein the first pocket extends from a proximal end of the pull ring to the distal end of the elongated body; a second pocket at said proximal end of said deflectable catheter shaft section; and a shaft coupler mounted in said second pocket, wherein said shaft coupler defines a coupler longitudinal axis aligned with said body longitudinal axis, and wherein said shaft coupler defines (a) a plurality of coupler lumens extending along said coupler longitudinal axis and (b) an outer radial surface defining a circumferentially-extending recess. 12. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 11 further comprising a tip assembly affixed in said first pocket. 13. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 11 further comprising a longitudinally extending trough on said outer radial surface of said shaft coupler. 14. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 11 further comprising a plurality of shaft lumens extending along said body longitudinal axis, wherein at least one of said plurality of shaft lumens is abutting at least another one of said plurality of shaft lumens. 15. A catheter shaft comprising the following: an elongated body extending along a body longitudinal axis and comprising a distal end and a proximal end; a first pocket at said distal end of said elongated body and attached to a pull ring within the first pocket and a tip assembly, wherein the first pocket extends from a proximal end of the pull ring to the distal end of the elongated body; a second pocket at said proximal end of said elongated body; and a shaft coupler mounted in said second pocket, wherein said shaft coupler defines a coupler longitudinal axis aligned with said body longitudinal axis, and wherein said shaft coupler is configured to abut at least one compression coil and said shaft coupler defines a plurality of coupler lumens extending along said coupler longitudinal axis. 16. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 15 further comprising a tip assembly affixed in said first pocket. 17. The deflectable catheter shaft section of claim 15 further comprising a longitudinally extending trough on said outer radial surface of said shaft coupler. 18.
