A novel latch seat for a switching rocker arm assembly used in variable valve actuation (VVA) systems for internal combustion engines. The seat is formed interactively in the assembled switching rocker arm using a novel fixture and press. The press interactively creates a curved dimple of the correct curvature, position and depth while measuring several lash dimensions. Since the latch seat is formed on the assembled rocker arm assembly, the latch seat depth is designed to account for the inaccuracies in the rocker arm assembly parts which create lash. Therefore all of the parts may be made with less precision since the latch seat is sized to compensate for the inaccuracies of all of the parts. The rocker arm assembly parts now may be manufactured to less stringent standards, but result in a rocker arm assembly with same accuracy of rocker arm assemblies manufactured to previous standards.

What is claimed is: 1. A switching rocker arm assembly comprising: a plurality of rocker arms and additional structures connected together having manufacturing tolerances that introduce mechanical lash, each switching rocker arm comprising; an outer rocker arm comprising first and second arms, the outer rocker arm further comprising a latch seat; an inner rocker arm adapted for assembly between the first and second arms, the inner rocker arm further comprising a latch with a latch pin, wherein the latch seat is adapted to receive and secure the latch pin, the latch seat comprising: an indentation having a shape complementary to a shape of the latch pin, the indentation having a depth chosen to compensate for at least a portion of the mechanical lash to result in a predefined lash. 2. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the mechanical lash for each switching rocker arm comprises a latch lash. 3. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 2 , wherein the predefined lash for each switching rocker arm comprises the latch lash and a cam lash. 4. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 3 , wherein the latch lash is adjustable within limits such that an adjustable latch lash and the cam lash comprise a total mechanical lash. 5. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 4 , wherein the adjustable latch lash comprises a spacing between a latch pad surface of the latch of the inner arm and an arm engaging surface of the outer arm. 6. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 1 , wherein the latch seat and the latch pin engage without a point contact. 7. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 1 , wherein the latch pin of the inner arm is adapted to engage with the latch seat of the outer arm to latch the inner arm to the outer arm for a high lift mode of operation of the switching rocker arm assembly. 8. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 7 , where the shape of the latch pin in a portion adapted for engagement with the latch seat comprises a circular cross section. 9. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a pivot axle mounted to the inner rocker arm and the outer rocker arm at a first end of the rocker arms, and the latch seat positioned near a second end of the rocker arms. 10. A switching rocker arm assembly, comprising: an outer rocker arm comprising a first arm and a second arm and an arcuate engaging surface; an inner rocker arm comprising a latch bore and a latch pin, wherein a portion of the latch pin adapted for engagement with the arcuate engaging surface of the outer rocker arm comprises a circular cross section; wherein the arcuate engaging surface and the latch pin comprise a latch; wherein a spacing between the arcuate engaging surface and the latch pin comprises a latch lash; and wherein the latch lash is adjustable and wherein the latch lash and a cam lash comprise a total mechanical lash for a valve operated by the switching rocker arm assembly. 11. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 10 , wherein the arcuate engaging surface of the outer rocker arm comprises an indentation in a portion of the outer rocker arm that is perpendicular to the first and second arms of the outer rocker arm. 12. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 10 , further comprising a sleeve between the latch bore and at least a portion of the latch pin. 13. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 10 , further comprising a pivot axle mounted to the inner rocker arm and the outer rocker arm at a first end of the rocker arms, and wherein the latch pin engages the outer rocker arm at a second end of the outer rocker arm. 14. A switching rocker arm assembly, comprising: an outer rocker arm comprising a first arm and a second arm and an arcuate engaging surface; an inner rocker arm comprising a latch bore and a latch pin, wherein a portion of the latch pin adapted for engagement with the arcuate engaging surface of the outer rocker arm comprises a circular cross section; wherein the arcuate engaging surface and the latch pin comprise a latch; wherein a spacing between the arcuate engaging surface and the latch pin comprises a latch lash; and wherein the latch lash is adjustable by a method of forming the arcuate engaging surface of the outer rocker arm. 15. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 14 , wherein the arcuate engaging surface of the outer rocker arm comprises an indentation in a portion of the outer rocker arm that is perpendicular to the first and second arms of the outer rocker arm. 16. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 14 , further comprising a sleeve between the latch bore and at least a portion of the latch pin. 17. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 14 , further comprising a pivot axle mounted to the inner rocker arm and the outer rocker arm at a first end of the rocker arms, and wherein the latch pin engages the outer rocker arm at a second end of the outer rocker arm. 18. A switching rocker arm assembly, comprising: an outer rocker arm comprising a first arm and a second arm and an arcuate engaging surface; and an inner rocker arm comprising a latch bore and a latch pin, wherein a portion of the latch pin adapted for engagement with the arcuate engaging surface of the outer rocker arm comprises a circular cross section and wherein a spacing between the arcuate engaging surface and the latch pin comprises a latch lash, the latch lash adapted to be adjustable by adjusting the arcuate engaging surface of the outer rocker arm. 19. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 18 , wherein at least a portion of the latch pin has a circular cross section. 20. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 18 , wherein the latch lash is adapted to be adjustable by adjusting the arcuate engaging surface of the outer rocker arm after the inner rocker arm is assembled to the outer rocker arm. 21. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 18 , wherein the latch seat comprises a coined indentation in the outer rocker arm. 22. The switching rocker arm assembly of claim 18 , further comprising a sleeve within the latch bore, a portion of the sleeve and the latch bore forming a chamber for pressurized oil to retract the latch pin within the latch bore, wherein an oil-in surface of the portion of the sleeve is chamfered.
