A phase-separated polymeric composition comprising a first phase including polyurethane domains; and a second phase including a butyl rubber matrix.
Opening claim text (preview).
What is claimed is: 1. A method for preparing a polymeric composition, the method comprising: combining ingredients including halogenated butyl rubber, a first phenolic resin having a plurality of hydroxyl groups, and optionally a second phenolic resin having a plurality of hydroxyl groups, in a reaction extruder, to form a blend; mixing the blend in the extruder, whereupon the halogenated butyl rubber, in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst, becomes a partially crosslinked butyl rubber within the blend; adding to the blend at least one diisocyanate and, optionally, one or more additives selected from the group consisting of polyurethane catalysts, oils, and tackifier resins; and mixing to allow the diisocyanate to react with at least a portion of the hydroxyl groups of the first phenolic resin and optional second phenolic resin to form polyurethane polymer domains dispersed within the partially crosslinked butyl rubber, wherein said polyurethane polymer is phase-separated from said butyl rubber at standard pressure and temperature. 2. A method for preparing a polymeric composition, the method comprising: combining halogenated butyl rubber, a first phenolic resin having a plurality of hydroxyl groups, and optionally a second phenolic resin having a plurality of hydroxyl groups, to form a crosslinkable blend; mixing the crosslinkable blend, in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst, at a temperature of from about 82.2° C. to about 132° C., to form a partially crosslinked butyl rubber within the blend; adding to the blend at least one diisocyanate and, optionally, one or more additives selected from the group consisting of polyurethane catalysts, oils, and tackifier resins; and mixing to allow the diisocyanate to react with at least a portion of the hydroxyl groups of the first phenolic resin and optional second phenolic resin to form polyurethane polymer domains dispersed within the partially crosslinked butyl rubber, wherein said polyurethane polymer is phase-separated from said butyl rubber at standard pressure and temperature. 3. The method of claim 1 , where said polyurethane is cocontinuous with said butyl rubber at temperatures above 120° C.
