Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A disposable loading unit for use with a surgical stapling instrument is disclosed. The disposable loading unit comprises a cutting member, an anvil, and a first replaceable stapling jaw assembly. The first replaceable stapling jaw assembly comprises a first cartridge body and first staples. The disposable loading unit further comprises a second replaceable stapling jaw assembly comprising a second cartridge body and second staples. The disposable loading unit further comprises a lockout that prevents the first replaceable stapling jaw assembly from being fired after the first replaceable stapling jaw assembly has been at least partially fired. The surgical stapling instrument and the disposable loading unit are configured to deploy the second staples from the second replaceable stapling jaw assembly with which the first replaceable stapling jaw assembly is replaced.

What is claimed is: 1. A disposable loading unit for use with a surgical stapling instrument, said disposable loading unit comprising: a frame including a proximal connector attachable to the surgical stapling instrument; a cutting member slidably positioned in said frame; an anvil; a cartridge channel attachable to and detachable from said frame; a cartridge position stop; a plurality of replaceable staple cartridges, wherein each said replaceable staple cartridge is configured to be removably positioned in said cartridge channel, and wherein each said replaceable staple cartridge comprises: a cartridge body; a deck comprising a first deck surface and a second deck surface, wherein said first deck surface is positioned above said second deck surface, and wherein said cartridge body is positionable by said cartridge position stop to properly align said first deck surface and said second deck surface relative to said anvil; a first longitudinal row of staple cavities defined in said first deck surface; a second longitudinal row of staple cavities defined in said second deck surface; staples removably stored in said first longitudinal row of staple cavities and said second longitudinal row of staple cavities; staple drivers configured to fire said staples toward said anvil; and a sled configured to drive said staple drivers toward said anvil; and a lockout that prevents a first replaceable staple cartridge of said plurality of replaceable staple cartridges from being fired after said first replaceable staple cartridge has been at least partially fired, wherein the surgical stapling instrument and said disposable loading unit are configured to deploy staples from another replaceable staple cartridge of said plurality of replaceable staple cartridges with which said first replaceable staple cartridge is replaced. 2. The disposable loading unit of claim 1 , further comprising means for relatively positioning said staple cartridges and said anvil. 3. A disposable loading unit for use with a surgical stapling instrument, said disposable loading unit comprising: a frame including a proximal connector attachable to the surgical stapling instrument; a cutting member; an anvil; a cartridge channel removably attachable to said frame; a cartridge position stop; a first replaceable staple cartridge configured to be removably positioned in said cartridge channel, wherein said first replaceable staple cartridge comprises: a first cartridge body; a deck, wherein said first cartridge body is positionable by said cartridge position stop to properly position said deck relative to said anvil; a first longitudinal row of staple cavities; a second longitudinal row of staple cavities; first staples removably stored in said first longitudinal row of staple cavities and said second longitudinal row of staple cavities; and first staple drivers configured to fire said first staples against said anvil; a second replaceable staple cartridge configured to be removably positioned in said cartridge channel, wherein said second replaceable staple cartridge comprises: a second cartridge body; and second staples removably stored in said second cartridge body; a sled configured to drive said first staple drivers toward said anvil; and a lockout that prevents said first replaceable staple cartridge from being fired after said first replaceable staple cartridge has been at least partially fired, wherein the surgical stapling instrument and said disposable loading unit are configured to deploy said second staples from said second replaceable staple cartridge with which said first replaceable staple cartridge is replaced. 4. The disposable loading unit of claim 3 , further comprising means for relatively positioning said first replaceable staple cartridge and said anvil. 5. A disposable loading unit for use with a surgical stapling instrument, said disposable loading unit comprising: a frame including a proximal connector attachable to the surgical stapling instrument; a cutting member; an anvil; a first replaceable stapling jaw assembly, comprising: a staple cartridge support detachably joinable with said frame; a first cartridge body including a deck; a first longitudinal row of staple cavities defined in said deck; a second longitudinal row of staple cavities defined in said deck; first staples removably stored in said first longitudinal row of staple cavities and said second longitudinal row of staple cavities; staple drivers configured to fire said first staples against said anvil; and a sled configured to drive said staple drivers toward said anvil; a second replaceable stapling jaw assembly, comprising: a second cartridge body; and second staples removably stored in said second cartridge body; and a lockout that prevents said first replaceable stapling jaw assembly from being fired after said first replaceable stapling jaw assembly has been at least partially fired, wherein the surgical stapling instrument and said disposable loading unit are configured to deploy said second staples from said second replaceable stapling jaw assembly with which said first replaceable stapling jaw assembly is replaced. 6. The disposable loading unit of claim 5 , further comprising means for relatively positioning said stapling jaw assemblies and said anvil.
