Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Disclosed are methods, apparatus, systems, and computer readable storage media for filtering content to be displayed in an online social network. Highlights from a plurality of highlight sources relevant to a first user can be received. Topics or other subject matter associated with the received highlights can be identified and social network data to be presented to the first user can be determined based on the identified subject matter. In some implementations, data indicating the determined social network data can be generated and provided to a display device associated with the first user. A presentation including a reference to the determined social network data can be displayed on the display device.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: maintaining, using a database system, a plurality of data objects identifying: a plurality of topics of a social networking system accessible by a plurality of users, and a plurality of highlight sources for sharing highlights of the social networking system with at least a first one of the users, the highlight sources comprising at least: a first subset of the users with which the first user communicates more than with others of the users, and a second subset of the users having more influence in the social networking system than others of the users; identifying, using the database system, a plurality of highlights from the highlight sources, the highlights comprising: social network data stored as or identifiable using data objects of the database system, a change in a field of a database record, a change in a status of a database record, and a change in a type of a database record; identifying, using the database system, one or more of the topics as being associated with the identified highlights; identifying, using the database system, online social network information based on the identified one or more topics; determining a user sentiment graph associated with the identified social network information; identifying, based on an overlap of the user sentiment graph with a user social graph and a user interest graph, a subset of the social network information as being relevant to the first user; storing or updating one or more data objects of the database system to identify the subset of social network information in association with the user sentiment graph; determining a characteristic of an assessment of a user sentiment based on the user sentiment graph; and causing code to be generated to display the characteristic of the assessment of the user sentiment in association with the subset of social network information on a device associated with the first user. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identified highlights comprise one or more of: posts, messages, conversations, record updates, uploaded files, advertisements, or multimedia data of the social networking system. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identified highlights comprise customer relationship management (CRM) data associated with one or more of: an account, a case, a contact, a lead, or an opportunity. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: assessing the user sentiment based on a plurality of user sentiments. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subset of social network information comprises all or a subset of the identified highlights. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subset of social network information identifies one or more of: users, records, topics, updates, or conversations. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: generating a recommendation for the first user to follow one or more users; and causing the recommendation to be displayed on the device associated with the first user. 8. The method of claim 1 , the highlight sources further comprising: a third subset of the users determined based at least in part on random selection, and a subset of the topics designated as relevant to the first user. 9. A system comprising: a database system implemented using a server system, the database system configurable to cause: maintaining, using the database system, a plurality of data objects identifying: a plurality of topics of a social networking system accessible by a plurality of users, and a plurality of highlight sources for sharing highlights of the social networking system with at least a first one of the users, the highlight sources comprising at least: a first subset of the users with which the first user communicates more than with others of the users, and a second subset of the users having more influence in the social networking system than others of the users; identifying, using the database system, a plurality of highlights from the highlight sources, the highlights comprising: social network data stored as or identifiable using data objects of the database system, a change in a field of a database record, a change in a status of a database record, and a change in a type of a database record; identifying, using the database system, one or more of the topics as being associated with the identified highlights; identifying, using the database system, online social network information based on the identified one or more topics; determining a user sentiment graph associated with the identified social network information; identifying, based on an overlap of the user sentiment graph with a user social graph and a user interest graph, a subset of the social network information as being relevant to the first user; storing or updating one or more data objects of the database system to identify the subset of social network information in association with the user sentiment graph; determining a characteristic of an assessment of a user sentiment based on the user sentiment graph; and generating code to display the characteristic of the assessment of the user sentiment in association with the subset of social network information on a device associated with the first user. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the identified highlights comprise one or more of: posts, messages, conversations, record updates, uploaded files, advertisements, or multimedia data of the social networking system. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the identified highlights comprise customer relationship management (CRM) data associated with one or more of: an account, a case, a contact, a lead, or an opportunity. 12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the identified social network information comprises all or a subset of the identified highlights. 13. The system of claim 9 , the database system further configurable to cause: generating a recommendation for the first user to follow one or more users; and displaying the recommendation on the device associated with the first user. 14. The system of claim 9 , the highlight sources further comprising: a third subset of the users determined based at least in part on random selection, and a subset of the topics designated as relevant to the first user. 15. A computer program product comprising program code to be executed by one or more processors when retrieved from a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the program code comprising instructions configurable to cause: maintaining, using a database system, a plurality of data objects identifying: a plurality of topics of a social networking system accessible by a plurality of users, and a plurality of highlight sources for sharing highlights of the social networking system with at least a first one of the users, the highlight sources comprising at least: a first subset of the users with which the first user communicates more than with others of the users, and a second subset of the users having more influence in the social networking system than others of the users; identifying, using the database system, a plurality of highlights from the highlight sources, the highlights comprising: social network data stored as or identifiable using data objects of the database system, a change in a field of a database record, a change in a status of a database record, and a change in a type of a database record; identifying, using the database system, one or more of the topics as being associated with the identified highlights; identifying, using the database system, online social network information based on the identifi
