Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A burr attachment designed for use with a curved burr attachment or other chuck attachments that includes a tube with a wire shaft supported therein and a coil spring surrounding said wire shaft and having each of the coils touch the outer periphery surface of the wire shaft and the inner peripheral surface of said tube to enhance cooling of said outer periphery of said tube from the heat generated by said wire shaft and attenuate vibrations while allowing said burr attachment to be bent without kinking.

The invention claimed is: 1. A burr attachment comprising, an elongated tube, a wire shaft supported in said tube, a distal end of said wire shaft sized and configured to couple with a corresponding cutter, a fixed coil wire mounted between said elongated tube and said wire shaft and surrounding said wire shaft, a proximal support member, and a distal support member, a portion of the distal support member received within a central bore provided in the proximal support member such that the distal support member is rotatably coupled to the proximal support member, wherein the wire shaft extends through the distal support member and is fixedly coupled to the proximal support member such that the wire shaft is rotatable relative to the distal support member and the coil wire. 2. The burr attachment of claim 1 , wherein said coil wire is helically wound and each of the coils of said coil wire touch an inner surface of said elongated tube and an outer surface of said wire shaft for minimizing the heat transfer from said wire shaft to said tube. 3. The burr attachment of claim 1 , wherein said proximal support member includes: a generally cylindrical shaped main body having a proximal end and a distal end, an annular groove formed intermediate the proximal and distal ends of the main body, and a flat formed adjacent the proximal end of said main body such that said proximal support member is capable of being inserted into a chuck driven by a motor for imparting rotary motion thereto. 4. The burr attachment of claim 3 , wherein said cylindrical shaped main body of said proximal support member includes the central bore extending axially and partially therein, the central bore including: a large diameter portion formed at the distal end of said main body and sized and configured to receive the portion of the distal support member, and a small diameter portion extending axially from said large diameter portion towards the proximal end of said main body, said large diameter portion receiving said distal support member, said small diameter portion receiving said wire shaft. 5. The burr attachment of claim 4 , wherein the proximal support member includes an opening extending through a side wall of the proximal support member, the opening sized and configured to receive a tool for fixedly coupling the wire shaft to the proximal support member. 6. The burr attachment of claim 5 , wherein the opening is provided in the annular groove. 7. The burr attachment of claim 3 , wherein said distal support member includes: a generally cylindrical shaped main body, a reduced diameter portion formed on a proximal end of said distal support member main body, said reduced diameter portion sized and configured to be received within the central bore of the proximal end support, a larger diameter portion formed on a distal end of said distal support member main body, the larger diameter portion including: a groove adjacent to said reduced diameter portion, a flat adjacent to said groove, and a grip formed on a distal end said larger diameter portion, wherein said grip serves to assist in the removal of said burr attachment. 8. The burr attachment of claim 7 , wherein said cylindrically shaped main body of said distal support member includes a central bore extending axially there through, the central bore including: a large diameter portion formed at the distal end of said distal support member main body, and a small diameter portion extending axially between said large diameter portion the proximal end of said distal support member main body, the small diameter portion defines a passageway for said wire shaft. 9. The burr attachment of claim 8 including: an annular groove formed on the reduced diameter portion of said distal support member, and a projection extending from said the large diameter portion of said central bore of said proximal support member, wherein said projection is located proximate said annular groove of said reduced diameter portion when said proximal and distal support members are coupled. 10. The burr attachment of claim 3 , wherein said proximal support member includes an elliptically shaped tip formed at the proximal end of said main body adjacent to said flat. 11. A burr attachment comprising, an elongated tube, a wire shaft supported in said tube, a distal end of said wire shaft sized and configured to couple with a corresponding cutter; a coil wire mounted between an inner surface of said elongated tube and said wire shaft and surrounding said wire shaft, a distal support member coupled to a proximal support member, said proximal support member fixed to a proximal end of said wire shaft and being rotary relative to said distal support member, said proximal support member includes: a generally cylindrical shaped main body, a reduced diameter portion formed on the main body capable of being inserted into a chuck driven by a motor for imparting rotary motion thereto, said distal support member includes: a generally cylindrical shaped main body, a reduced diameter portion formed at a proximal end of said main body of the distal support member, said reduced diameter portion of the distal support member received within a central bore of the proximal support member. 12. The burr attachment of claim 11 , wherein said burr attachment being disposable and bendable without forming kinks therein and includes a grip formed on an end of said main body of said distal end support. 13. The burr attachment of claim 11 , wherein said main body of said distal support member is 0.785 inch long, wherein said distal support member includes large diameter portion having a groove formed at an end thereof adjacent to said reduced diameter portion and a flat formed adjacent to said groove, said groove extending a distance of substantially 0.276 inch from an end of said flat, wherein said elongated tube is substantially 2.650 inches long, and wherein said coil wire is substantially 2.240 inches long. 14. The burr attachment of claim 11 , wherein said main body of the proximal support member is substantially 0.450 inch long, and includes an annular groove extending substantially 0.235 inch from an end of said main body. 15. The burr attachment of claim 14 , wherein said main body of said proximal support member includes a tip end being substantially 0.051 inch long and 0.020 inch wide. 16. The burr attachment of claim 15 , wherein said elongated tube includes an inner surface and said wire shaft includes an outer surface wherein a peripheral edge of each coil of said coil wire substantially abuts said inner surface and said outer surface. 17. The burr attachment of claim 16 , wherein the central bore of the proximal support member partially extending along the end of said proximal support member, the central bore having a large diameter portion and a small diameter portion, wherein said small diameter portion has a diameter of substantially 0.014 inches. 18.
