Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hydraulic pumping system can include an actuator including a piston rod that displaces in response to pressure in the actuator, a seal assembly that seals about the piston rod and is exposed to the pressure in the actuator, and another seal assembly that seals about the piston rod, is exposed to pressure in a well and includes multiple separate seal cartridges, each of the seal cartridges including a dynamic seal that slidingly and sealingly engages the piston rod. Another hydraulic pumping system can include an actuator including a piston rod that displaces in response to pressure in the actuator, a seal assembly that seals about the piston rod and is exposed to the pressure in the actuator, and another seal assembly that seals about the piston rod, is exposed to pressure in a well and includes a labyrinth ring comprising multiple ring layers.

What is claimed is: 1. A hydraulic pumping system for use with a subterranean well, the system comprising: a hydraulic actuator including a piston rod that displaces in response to pressure in the hydraulic actuator; a first seal assembly that seals about the piston rod and is exposed to the pressure in the hydraulic actuator; and a second seal assembly that seals about the piston rod and is exposed to pressure in the well, the second seal assembly including multiple separate seal cartridges, each of the seal cartridges including a dynamic seal that slidingly and sealingly engages the piston rod. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the seal cartridges further includes a static seal that sealingly engages a housing of the second seal assembly. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the seal cartridges further includes a seal carrier that structurally isolates the dynamic seals of adjacent seal cartridges from each other. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second seal assembly further includes a labyrinth ring comprising multiple ring layers. 5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a lubricant injector that delivers a pressurized lubricant to a space between the first and second seal assemblies. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the piston rod is entirely isolated from atmosphere between the first and second seal assemblies. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second seal assembly is positioned in an annular seal housing, and wherein disconnection of the hydraulic actuator from the annular seal housing provides access to the second seal assembly. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein a hydraulic pump is connected between the hydraulic actuator and an accumulator, and wherein a hydraulic fluid is in contact with a pressurized gas in the accumulator. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein a hydraulic pump is connected between the hydraulic actuator and an accumulator, and wherein pressure in the accumulator is automatically regulated in response to measurements of pressure applied to the hydraulic actuator. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein an extent of reciprocation displacement of the piston rod is automatically varied in response to a measured vibration. 11. A hydraulic pumping system for use with a subterranean well, the system comprising: a hydraulic actuator including a piston rod that displaces in response to pressure in the hydraulic actuator; a first seal assembly that seals about the piston rod and is exposed to the pressure in the hydraulic actuator; and a second seal assembly that seals about the piston rod and is exposed to pressure in the well, the second seal assembly including a labyrinth ring comprising multiple ring layers. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second seal assembly further includes multiple separate seal cartridges, each of the seal cartridges including a dynamic seal that slidingly and sealingly engages the piston rod. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein each of the seal cartridges further includes a static seal that sealingly engages a housing of the second seal assembly. 14. The system of claim 12 , wherein each of the seal cartridges further includes a seal carrier that structurally isolates the dynamic seals of adjacent seal cartridges from each other. 15. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a lubricant injector that delivers a pressurized lubricant to a space between the first and second seal assemblies. 16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the piston rod is entirely isolated from atmosphere between the first and second seal assemblies. 17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second seal assembly is positioned in an annular seal housing, and wherein disconnection of the hydraulic actuator from the annular seal housing provides access to the second seal assembly. 18. The system of claim 11 , wherein a hydraulic pump is connected between the hydraulic actuator and an accumulator, and wherein a hydraulic fluid is in contact with a pressurized gas in the accumulator. 19. The system of claim 11 , wherein a hydraulic pump is connected between the hydraulic actuator and an accumulator, and wherein pressure in the accumulator is automatically regulated in response to measurements of pressure applied to the hydraulic actuator. 20. The system of claim 11 , wherein an extent of reciprocation displacement of the piston rod is automatically varied in response to a measured vibration.
