Drilling tools having axially-tapered waterways that can increase flushing and bit life, while also decreasing clogging. According to some implementations of the present invention, the waterways can be radially tapered in addition to being axially tapered. The axially-tapered waterways can include notches extending into the cutting face of the drilling tools and/or slots enclosed within the crown of the drilling tools. Implementations of the present invention also include drilling systems including drilling tools having axially-tapered waterways, and methods of forming drilling tools having axially-tapered waterways.

What is claimed is: 1. An impregnated, core-sampling drill bit, comprising: a shank; an annular crown including a longitudinal axis therethrough, a cutting face, an inner surface, and an outer surface, the annular crown defining an interior space about the longitudinal axis configured to receive a core sample, the annular crown defining a plurality of notches, each notch extending a first distance from the cutting face into the annular crown relative to the longitudinal axis and radially from the inner surface to the outer surface, wherein each notch of the plurality of notches is axially tapered whereby each notch of the plurality of notches has a variable longitudinal dimension, wherein the longitudinal dimension of each notch is greater at the outer surface than the longitudinal dimension the notch at the inner surface, wherein each notch of the plurality of notches is radially tapered whereby each notch of the plurality of notches has a variable width, wherein the width of each notch is greater at the outer surface than the width of the notch at the inner surface, wherein the annular crown is integrally formed of a selected matrix material, the selected matrix material comprising a matrix and a plurality of abrasive cutting media dispersed throughout the matrix, wherein the matrix of the selected matrix material is configured to erode to expose the abrasive cutting media within the matrix. 2. The impregnated, core sampling drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one enclosed slot formed in the crown, wherein a first enclosed slot is formed in the crown a second distance from the cutting face. 3. The impregnated, core sampling drill bit of claim 2 , wherein each enclosed slot is circumferentially positioned to not underlie any notch of the plurality of notches. 4. The impregnated, core-sampling drill bit of claim 2 , wherein the first distance is greater than the second distance whereby a portion of the notch axially overlaps the first enclosed slot. 5. The impregnated, core-sampling drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one inner flute extending from the inner surface toward the outer surface, each inner flute of the at least one inner flute extending axially along the inner surface from a respective notch of the plurality of notches toward the shank. 6. The impregnated, core-sampling drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one outer flute extending from the outer surface toward the inner surface, each outer flute of the at least one outer flute extending axially along the outer surface from a respective notch of the plurality of notches toward the shank. 7. The impregnated, core-sampling drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one fluid channel enclosed within the crown, each fluid channel of the at least one fluid channel extending from the shank to a respective notch of the plurality of notches. 8. The impregnated, core-sampling drill bit of claim 7 , further comprising a thin wall extending around the inner surface of the crown, wherein the thin wall separates the plurality of notches from the interior space. 9.
