The invention claimed is: 1. A method for producing a linear hydrocarbon, comprising reacting a linear aliphatic aldehyde in the presence of at least one metal ion selected from the group consisting of a vanadium ion and a thallium ion to produce a linear hydrocarbon. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the linear aliphatic aldehyde is a linear aliphatic aldehyde having 8 to 18 carbon atoms. 3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the reaction is carried out in a solvent containing water. 4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one metal ion is a vanadium ion. 5. The method according to claim 3 , wherein a concentration of the at least one metal ion in the solvent is 0.1 ppm to 2000 ppm. 6. The method according to claim 3 , wherein a concentration of the at least one metal ion in the solvent is 50 ppm to 500 ppm. 7. The method according to claim 3 , wherein a concentration of the linear aliphatic aldehyde in the solvent is 0.1 mM to 20 mM. 8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein a concentration of the linear aliphatic aldehyde in the solvent is 0.1 mM to 20 mM. 9. The method of claim 3 , wherein a ratio of the linear aliphatic aldehyde to the metal ion in the solvent is 1:2 to 1:1000. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the linear aliphatic aldehyde is selected from the group consisting of octanal, nonanal, decanal, undecanal, dodecanal, tridecanal, tetradecanal, pentadecanal, hexadecanal, heptadecanal, and octadecanal.
