Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A welding torch with a welding electrode and a welding electrode holder is provided. One welding torch includes a securing mechanism and an insulated grip. The securing mechanism is configured to secure an exposed central portion of a welding rod bounded by flux covered first and second sides. The securing mechanism is also configured to make electrical contact with the central portion of the rod for arc welding with the first side. The insulated grip is configured to cover the second side of the welding rod.

The invention claimed is: 1. A welding rod comprising: a central portion comprising an electrode core material; a first side portion extending from a first side of the central portion and comprising the electrode core material coated in flux from the first side of the central portion to a first axial end of the welding rod; and a second side portion extending from a second side of the central portion and comprising the electrode core material coated in flux from the second side of the central portion to a second axial end of the welding rod, wherein the first axial end of the welding rod is opposite the second axial end of the welding rod, wherein the first side portion and the second side portion are each configured to be utilized as a welding electrode in a welding operation, one at a time. 2. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein the central portion is configured to enable electrical isolation of the first side portion while the second side portion is utilized in a welding operation. 3. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein an outer diameter of the central portion is between approximately 3/32″ and approximately ⅛″. 4. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein the electrode core material comprises stainless steel. 5. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, comprises rutile, potassium silicate, sodium silicate, quartz, calcite, mica, or some combination thereof. 6. The welding rod of claim 5 , wherein the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, comprises rutile. 7. The welding rod of claim 5 , wherein the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, comprises potassium silicate. 8. The welding rod of claim 5 , wherein the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, comprises sodium silicate. 9. The welding rod of claim 5 , wherein the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, comprises quartz. 10. The welding rod of claim 5 , wherein the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, comprises calcite. 11. The welding rod of claim 5 , wherein the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, comprises mica. 12. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a distance of the central portion between the first and second side portions is between approximately 1 centimeter and approximately 6 centimeters. 13. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a distance of the central portion between the first and second side portions is between approximately 3 centimeters and approximately 8 centimeters. 14. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a distance of the central portion between the first and second side portions is between approximately 5 centimeters and approximately 10 centimeters. 15. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein an outer diameter of the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 2 millimeters and approximately 10 millimeters. 16. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein an outer diameter of the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 8 millimeters and approximately 18 millimeters. 17. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein an outer diameter of the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 14 millimeters and approximately 28 millimeters. 18. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a distance of the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 10 centimeters and approximately 18 centimeters. 19. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a distance of the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 15 centimeters and approximately 25 centimeters. 20. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a distance of the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 21 centimeters and approximately 30 centimeters. 21. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 0.5 millimeters and approximately 2.5 millimeters. 22. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 2.0 millimeters and approximately 4.5 millimeters. 23. The welding rod of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the flux coating the first side portion, the second side portion, or both, is between approximately 3.5 millimeters and approximately 7.0 millimeters.
