Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method of verifying the identity of a user or registrant. The user or registrant provides identification information and registration information. The identification information may be a visual representation of an identifying item associated with location information. In some embodiments, the identification information may be a visual representation of a government issued identity. An identification module verifies the identification information and compares the verified identification information to the registration information.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for verifying identity comprising: a user interface comprising circuitry configured to: receive registration information including registrant name and mailing address from a registrant; request identification information from the registrant; receive identification information from the registrant, the identification information comprising a visual representation of a mailpiece which displays the registrant name and address and which has been delivered to the mailing address of the registrant; communicate the registration information and the identification information to an application; receive an identity credential from the application; and communicate the identity credential to the registrant; wherein the identity credential is based on the registration information and the identification information. 2. The system of claim 1 , the identification information further comprising location information indicative of registrant location at a time of registration. 3. The system of claim 1 , the identification information further comprising location information indicative of the presence of the registrant at a location. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identification information comprises a visual representation of a government issued identification. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identification information further comprises a photograph of an item delivered to the address of the registrant, which address corresponds to received address information of an identifying item. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the identification information is associated with the location of the identifying item. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the identity credential is based on comparing the registrant address with the location associated with the visual representation of the identifying item. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface is configured for use by a registrant for registration of an account. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mailpiece includes computer readable code, and wherein the circuitry is further configured to receive the code and to determine if the code corresponds to code generated by the system. 10. A method of verifying an identity comprising: receiving registration information including registrant name and mailing address from a registrant; requesting identification information from the registrant; receiving identification information from the registrant, the identification information comprising a visual representation of a mailpiece which displays the registrant name and address and which has been delivered to the mailing address of the registrant; communicating the registration information and the identification information to an application; receiving an identity credential from the application; and communicating the identity credential to the registrant; wherein the identity credential is based on the registration information and the identification information. 11. The method of claim 10 , the identification information further comprising location information indicative of registrant location at a time of registration. 12. The method of claim 10 , the identification information further comprising location information indicative of the presence of the registrant at a location. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the registration information and identification information are received at a user interface. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the application is an application of a mobile device. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the identification information comprises a visual representation of a government issued identification. 16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the identification information further comprises a photograph of an item delivered to the address of the registrant, which address corresponds to received address information of an identifying item. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the identification information is associated with the location of the identifying item. 18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the identity credential is based on comparing the registrant address with the location associated with the visual representation of the identifying item. 19. The method of claim 10 , wherein the registration information and identification information are provided for registration of an account. 20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising using the identity credential to access the account. 21. The method of claim 10 , wherein the mailpiece includes computer readable code, and wherein the method further comprises: receiving the computer readable code; and determining if the code corresponds to code previously generated by the system. 22. A system for verifying identity comprising: means for receiving registration information including registrant name and mailing address from a registrant; means for requesting identification information from the registrant; means for receiving identification information from the registrant, the identification information comprising a visual representation of a mailpiece which displays the registrant name and address and which has been delivered to the mailing address of the registrant; means for communicating the registration information and the identification information to an application; means for receiving an identity verification confirmation from the application; and means for communicating the identity verification confirmation to the registrant; wherein the identity verification is based on a comparison of the registration information with the identification information.
