Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Segmented scaffolds composed of disconnected scaffold segments are delivered to an implant site on a delivery balloon. The segments are crimped to the balloon and separated from each other by gaps. When the balloon is inflated the gaps between the disconnected scaffold segments stay constant. Pillowed or banded balloons are used to deliver the segments.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: crimping a plurality of scaffold segments to a balloon, wherein the crimped segments are disconnected from each other and arranged end to end over the balloon; wherein ends of adjacent segments are separated by a gap having a gap size, the balloon has an outer surface comprising a gap region located at the gap and the gap region has a width no greater than the gap size; and disposing a coating comprising an antiproliferative drug only at the gap region. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein when the segments are crimped to the balloon the gaps have a first size, when the segments are radially expanded by the balloon the gaps have a second size, and wherein the first size is equal to the second size. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gap region comprises bands of raised balloon material. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of scaffolds are formed from a tube or sheet of polymer material; and a segment of the segments comprises a first ring and a second ring adjoined to the first ring, and a link connects a crest of the first ring to a trough of the second ring, and wherein the plurality of rings are arranged to form diamond-shaped elements. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a segment of the segments comprises a plurality of diamond-shaped elements. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the antiproliferative drug includes paclitaxel, protaxel, taxotere, docetaxel, ortataxel, everolimus, sirolimus, myolimus, novolimus, temsirolimus, merilimus, deforolimus, or zotarolimus. 7. The method of claim 1 , further including forming pillowed balloon portions at the gap regions. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the drug is disposed after forming the pillowed portions. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the drug is disposed at the gap regions after crimping the segments to the balloon. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the segments are shielded when the drug is disposed at the gap regions. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the drug is selectively applied only at the gap regions. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the antiproliferative drug is disposed only at the gap region before or after the segments are crimped to the balloon. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the balloon's gap region comprises a pre-pillowed portion of the balloon.
