Official abstract text for this publication.
A flow control device is disclosed. The flow control device includes a solenoid, the solenoid including an armature. Also, a piston connected to the armature. The piston includes a primary orifice. The piston having an open position and a closed position. A piston spring connected to the piston is also includes and at least one secondary orifice. The movement of the piston to the open position at least partially opens the at least one secondary orifice and the movement of the piston to the closed position at least partially closes the at least one secondary orifice. The movement of the armature actuates the piston movement and controls fluid flow from the primary orifice through the at least one secondary orifice.

What is claimed is: 1. A product dispensing system for dispensing a first ingredient and a second ingredient comprising: a flow control device, the flow control device for regulating the dispensing of the first ingredient by the product dispensing system, the flow control device comprising: a solenoid, the solenoid comprising an armature; a piston connected to the armature, the piston comprising a primary orifice, whereby the piston having an open position and a closed position; a piston spring connected to the piston; and at least one secondary orifice wherein movement of the piston to the open position at least partially opens the at least one secondary orifice and wherein movement of the piston to the closed position at least partially closes the at least one secondary orifice, wherein movement of the armature actuates the piston movement and controls fluid flow from the primary orifice through the at least one secondary orifice; a pump module configured to be coupled to a supply of the second ingredient, wherein movement of the armature actuates the piston movement and controls fluid flow from the primary orifice through the at least one secondary orifice, and wherein the flow sensor configured to provide a feedback signal based upon a volume of the first ingredient flowing within the flow control device; a binary valve comprising: a plunger; a spring for biasing the plunger in an open position; and a diaphragm actuated by the plunger, wherein the piston actuates the plunger to move the plunger to a closed position; and a controller configured to provide a first control signal to the flow control device for controlling the supply of a first quantity of the first ingredient based upon, at least in part, a predetermined recipe, and to provide a second control signal to the pump module for controlling the supply of a first quantity of the second ingredient based upon, at least in part, the predetermined recipe. 2. The product dispensing system of claim 1 wherein the piston further comprising at least one radial groove. 3. The product dispensing system wherein the piston further comprising two radial grooves. 4. The product dispensing system wherein the solenoid is a constant force solenoid. 5. The product dispensing system of claim 1 further comprising at least one sensor for sensing fluid flow. 6. The product dispensing system of claim 5 further comprising a reluctance sensor, the reluctance sensor for determining the position of the piston. 7. The product dispensing system of claim 5 further comprising an anemometer in thermal communication with the fluid flow. 8. The product dispensing system of claim 5 further comprising a paddle wheel sensor for sensing fluid flow. 9. The product dispensing system of claim 8 wherein the paddle wheel sensor comprising: a paddle wheel; an infrared emitter for emitting an infrared beam; and an infrared receiver for receiving the emitted infrared beam, wherein the infrared emitter and the infrared receiver are located on opposite sides of the paddle wheel and wherein the fluid flow rotates the paddle wheel and the paddle wheel interrupts the infrared beam.
