A fail-safe release mechanism for use with patient positioning support apparati having a base structure and a patient support structure, to prevent collapse of the patient support during disconnection of the patient support structure from the base structure.

What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is as follows: 1. A base structure for supporting a patient support structure above a floor, the base structure comprising: an end support supported on the floor at a first end and comprising a second end above the first end; a locking structure; a rotator member rotatably coupled with the second end of the end support; and a connection subassembly releasably coupled to the rotator member and configured to releasably couple to an end of the patient support structure, the connection subassembly comprising at least one lock member, a first connection end, and a second connection end opposite the first connection end, the at least one lock member including a U-shaped portion near the first connection end, the connection subassembly configured to couple to the rotator member when the U-shaped portion moves relative to the second connection end to cause the U-shaped portion to engage with a portion of the locking structure, wherein decoupling of the connection subassembly from the rotator member is prevented when the connection subassembly is coupled with the end of the patient support structure such that the engagement of the U-shaped portion of the at least one locking member with the portion of the locking structure cannot be disengaged until the connection subassembly is decoupled from the end of the patient support structure. 2. The base structure of claim 1 , wherein the locking structure includes a pin. 3. The base structure of claim 2 , wherein the portion of the locking structure includes a cylindrical body of the pin. 4. The base structure of claim 1 , wherein the connection subassembly further comprises a pair of spaced apart arms. 5. The base structure of claim 1 , wherein the movement of the U-shaped portion relative to the second connection end is translational movement. 6. The base structure of claim 1 , wherein the end of the patient support structure is configured to couple with the connection subassembly between the first and second connection ends. 7. A base structure for supporting a patient support structure above a floor, the base structure comprising: an end support supported on the floor at a first end and comprising a second end above the first end; a rotator member rotatably coupled with the second end of the end support and comprising an attachment portion; and a connection subassembly releasably coupled to the rotator member at the attachment portion and configured to releasably couple to an end of the patient support structure, the connection subassembly comprising at least one arm member, a locking member positioned on a first side of the at least one arm member, and a cylindrical member extending outward from first side of the at least one arm member, wherein, when a portion of the at least one arm member is positioned adjacent the attachment portion, movement of the locking member relative to the cylindrical member causes the locking member to engage with a first locking component at the attachment portion of the rotator member which couples the connection subassembly to the rotator member, wherein decoupling of the connection subassembly from the rotator member is prevented when the connection subassembly is coupled to the end of the patient support structure such that the engagement of the locking member with the first locking component at the attachment portion of the rotator member cannot be disengaged until the connection subassembly is decoupled from the end of the patient support structure. 8. The base structure of claim 7 , wherein the portion of the at least one arm member comprises a first end of the at least one arm member. 9. The base structure of claim 8 , wherein the first locking component comprises a pin. 10. The base structure of claim 7 , wherein the connection subassembly is coupled to the end of the patient support structure by a second locking component such that pulling of a handle of the second locking component causes the locking member to disengage from the first locking component. 11. The base structure of claim 10 , wherein the second locking component comprises a pin. 12. A base structure for supporting a patient support structure above a floor, the base structure comprising: an end support supported on the floor at a first end and comprising a second end above the first end; a rotator member rotatably coupled with the second end of the end support and comprising an attachment portion; and a connection subassembly releasably coupled to the rotator member at the attachment portion and configured to releasably couple to an end of the patient support structure, the connection subassembly comprising at least one arm member, a locking member positioned on a first side of the at least one arm member, and a cylindrical member extending outward from first side of the at least one arm member, wherein, when a portion of the at least one arm member is positioned adjacent the attachment portion, movement of the locking member relative to the cylindrical member causes the locking member to engage with a first locking component at the attachment portion of the rotator member which coupled the the connection subassembly to the rotator member, wherein the cylindrical member restricts the movement of the locking member to a single degree of freedom when the portion of the at least one arm member is positioned adjacent the attachment portion. 13. The base structure of claim 12 , wherein the single degree of freedom is translation. 14. The base structure of claim 7 , wherein the cylindrical member comprises a bolt.
