B7-H5 costimulatory polypeptides, nucleic acids encoding such polypeptides, and methods for using the polypeptides and nucleic acids to enhance a T cell response are provided herein.

I claim: 1. An isolated nucleic acid that consists of: (a) a polynucleotide that encodes a polypeptide consisting of an extracellular region of a protein, wherein the polynucleotide hybridizes over its full length, after a wash at 50° C. to 60° C. in a buffer containing 0.2×SSC and 0.1% SDS, to the complement of a nucleotide sequence consisting of nucleotide 88 to nucleotide 936 of SEQ ID NO:2; or (b) the complement of (a). 2. The nucleic acid of claim 1 (a), having a property selected from the following: (i) the polynucleotide hybridizes over its full length, after a wash at 50° C. to 60° C. in a buffer containing 0.2×SSC and 0.1% SDS, to the complement of a nucleotide sequence consisting of nucleotide 88 to nucleotide 570 of SEQ ID NO:2; (ii) the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide comprises amino acid 40 to amino acid 190 of SEQ ID NO:1; (iii) the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide comprises amino acid 35 to amino acid 190 of SEQ ID NO:1; (iv) the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide comprises amino acid 30 to amino acid residue 190 of SEQ ID NO:1; and (v) the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide comprises nucleotide 88 to nucleotide 570 of SEQ ID NO:2. 3. A vector comprising the nucleic acid of claim 1 (a). 4. A vector comprising the nucleic acid of claim 2 . 5. An isolated recombinant cell transfected or transformed with a nucleic acid according to claim 1 or a vector containing said nucleic acid. 6. The cell of claim 5 , wherein the cell is eukaryotic or a prokaryotic cell. 7. The cell of claim 6 , wherein the cell is a mammalian cell. 8. The cell of claim 5 , wherein the cell is a human cell. 9. The cell of claim 8 , wherein the human cell is selected from a hematological cell, an antigen presenting cell (APC), a bone marrow cell, a dendritic cell, a macrophage, a monocyte, a B cell, a fibroblast, an epithelial cell, an endothelial cell, a keratinocyte, a muscle cell, and a tumor cell. 10. A method of producing a polypeptide, the method comprising culturing an isolated recombinant cell transfected or transformed with: (a) a nucleic acid that consists of (i) a polynucleotide that encodes a polypeptide consisting of an extracellular region of a protein, wherein the polynucleotide hybridizes over its full length, after a wash at 50° C. to 60° C. in a buffer containing 0.2×SSC and 0.1% SDS, to the complement of a nucleotide sequence consisting of nucleotide 88 to nucleotide 936 of SEQ ID NO:2, or (ii) the complement of (i), or (b) a vector containing said nucleic acid, under conditions permitting expression of the polypeptide by the cell, wherein the nucleic acid is operably linked to an expression control sequence. 11. An isolated nucleic acid consisting of a polynucleotide that encodes a polypeptide consisting of all or part of amino acid 30 to amino acid 311 of SEQ ID NO:1 and including at least an V-like Ig domain consisting of amino acid 47 to amino acid 150 of SEQ ID NO:1. 12. The nucleic acid of claim 11 , wherein the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide comprises amino acid 40 to amino acid 311 of SEQ ID NO: 1. 13. The nucleic acid of claim 11 , wherein the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide comprises amino acid 35 to amino acid 311 of SEQ ID NO:1. 14. The nucleic acid of claim 11 , wherein the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide comprises amino acid 30 to amino acid 311 of SEQ ID NO:1. 15. A nucleic acid consisting of a nucleotide sequence encoding a fusion protein comprising a first domain and at least one additional domain, wherein the first domain consists of an amino acid sequence encoded by a polynucleotide that encodes a polypeptide consisting of an extracellular region of a protein, wherein the polynucleotide hybridizes over its full length, after a wash at 50° C. to 60° C. in a buffer containing 0.2×SSC and 0.1% SDS, to the complement of a nucleotide sequence consisting of nucleotide 88 to nucleotide 936 of SEQ ID NO:2 and the at least one additional domain comprises an amino acid sequence that is unrelated to SEQ ID NO:1. 16. The nucleic acid of claim 15 , wherein the polynucleotide is selected from one that: (i) hybridizes over its full length, after a wash at 50° C. to 60° C. in a buffer containing 0.2×SSC and 0.1% SDS, to the complement of a nucleotide sequence consisting of nucleotide 88 to nucleotide 570 of SEQ ID NO:2; (ii) encodes a polypeptide that comprises amino acid 40 to amino acid 190 of SEQ ID NO: 1; (iii) encodes a polypeptide that comprises amino acid 35 to amino acid 190 of SEQ ID NO:1; and (iv) encodes a polypeptide that comprises amino acid 30 to amino acid 190 of SEQ ID NO:1. 17. The nucleic acid of claim 15 , wherein the at least one additional domain is selected from the group consisting of: a heterologous targeting or leader sequence; an amino acid sequence that facilitates purification, detection or solubility of the fusion protein; and all or part of an immunoglobulin heavy chain constant region. 18. A nucleic acid consisting of a nucleotide sequence encoding a fusion protein comprising a first domain and at least one additional domain, wherein the first domain consists of a polypeptide consisting of all or part of amino acid 30 to amino acid 311 of SEQ ID NO:1 and including at least an V-like Ig domain consisting of amino acid 47 to amino acid 150 of SEQ ID NO:1 and the at least one additional domain comprises an amino acid sequence that is unrelated to SEQ ID NO:1. 19. The nucleic acid of claim 18 , having a property selected from the following: (i) the polypeptide comprises amino acid 40 to amino acid 311 of SEQ ID NO: 1; (ii) the polypeptide comprises amino acid 35 to amino acid 311 of SEQ ID NO:1; (iii) the polypeptide comprises amino acid 30 to amino acid 311 of SEQ ID NO:1; and (iv) the at least one additional domain is selected from the group consisting of: a heterologous targeting or leader sequence; an amino acid sequence that facilitates purification, detection or solubility of the fusion protein; and all or part of an immunoglobulin heavy chain constant region.
