Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An external control device for use with a neurostimulator coupled to a plurality of electrodes capable of conveying electrical stimulation energy into tissue in which the electrodes are implanted. The external control device comprises a user interface configured for receiving direct input from a user specifying a target value for a target electrode. The user interface includes a display screen configured for displaying graphical representations of the electrodes. The user interface comprises a controller/processor configured for, in response to the direct user input, assigning a new stimulation amplitude value to the target electrode, and output circuitry configured for transmitting the new stimulation amplitude value to the neurostimulator.

What is claimed is: 1. An external control device for use with a neurostimulator coupled to a plurality of electrodes capable of conveying electrical stimulation energy into tissue in which the electrodes are implanted, comprising: a user interface configured for receiving direct input from a user specifying a target value for a target electrode, the user interface including a display screen configured for displaying graphical representations of the electrodes; a controller/processor configured for, in response to the direct user input, assigning a new stimulation amplitude value to the target electrode; and output circuitry configured for transmitting the new stimulation amplitude value to the neurostimulator, wherein the controller/processor is configured for, in response to the direct user input, assigning new stimulation amplitude values to an adjusted set of electrodes having a same polarity as the target electrode in accordance with a predetermined rule, the new stimulation amplitude values are fractionalized electrical current values and the predetermined rule is a Ratio Maintenance Rule (RMR) configured to maintain a total of the fractionalized electrical current values to be one hundred percent and compute a new fractionalized electrical current value assigned to each electrode of the adjusted electrode set in accordance with a ratio equal to a fractionalized electrical current value presently assigned to each respective electrode of the adjusted electrode set multiplied by a fractionalized current available to be assigned to the adjusted electrode set divided by a total of fractionalized electrical current values presently assigned to the adjusted electrode set. 2. The external control device of claim 1 , wherein the new stimulation amplitude value equals the target value. 3. The external control device of claim 1 , wherein the display screen is configured for displaying a graphical data entry symbol, and the direct user input comprises writing or typing the target value into the graphical data entry symbol. 4. The external control device of claim 3 , wherein the graphical data entry symbol is superimposed over the target electrode. 5. The external control device of claim 3 , wherein the graphical data entry symbol is a box. 6. The external control device of claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprises a keyboard, and the direct user input comprises typing the target value via the keyboard. 7. The external control device of claim 1 , wherein the target electrode is included within the adjusted electrode set. 8. The external control device of claim 1 , wherein the target electrode is excluded from the adjusted electrode set. 9. The external control device of claim 1 , wherein the display screen is configured for displaying the new fractionalized electrical values in respective association with graphical representations of the adjusted electrode set. 10. The external control device of claim 9 , wherein the display screen is configured for displaying the new fractionalized electrical values in respective association with graphical representations of the adjusted electrode set in response to the direct user input. 11. The external control device of claim 9 , wherein the user interface is configured for receiving an auto-adjust command from the user subsequent to the direct user input, and wherein the display screen is configured for displaying the new fractionalized electrical current values in respective association with graphical representation of the adjusted electrode set in response to the user command. 12. The external control device of claim 11 , wherein the user interface is further configured for receiving another direct input from the user specifying another target value for another target electrode having the same polarity as the target electrode, wherein the controller/processor is configured for, in response to the direct user input and the other direct user input, assigning the new stimulation amplitude values to the adjusted set of electrodes in accordance with a predetermined rule. 13. The external control device of claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprises at least one control element, and wherein the controller/processor is configured for linking at least two electrodes of the adjusted set of electrodes together in response to an actuation of the at least one control element, and for preventing stimulation amplitude values of the at least two electrodes from being varied relative to each other. 14. The external control device of claim 1 , wherein the controller/processor is configured for determining whether the specified target value for the target electrode input by the user violates any preset program rules, and upon determining that a violation exists, notifying the user of the violation. 15. The external control device of claim 1 , further comprising a housing containing the user interface, controller/processor, and output circuitry.
