Official abstract text for this publication.
An approach is provided for suggesting data for deletion from an electronic data storage medium. An external device detects initiation of transfer of data from first storage medium to second storage medium. Next, the external device determines an available storage in the second storage medium for the data. Then, the external device generates a list to suggest content for deletion within the second storage medium to accommodate the data.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: selecting data to be deleted from a non-volatile storage of a first device; determining whether the selected data exists on a device other than the first device; prompting for a first user input on whether to unselect the selected data in response to determining that the selected data does not exist on device other than the first device; when the selected data does not exist on a device other than the first device and the first user input indicates to unselect the selected data, unselecting the data to be deleted; and when the selected data does not exist on device other than the first device and the first user input indicates not to unselect the selected data, the method further comprises: prompting for a second user input for a storage location to back up the selected data on a device other than the first device, transferring the selected data to the storage location based on the user input for a storage location, and deleting the selected data from the non-volatile storage of the first device. 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the first device is one of a mobile device, a portable device, a wearable device, a computer and an internet node. 3. The method according to claim 1 further comprising deleting the selected data based on determining that the selected data does exist on a device other than the first device. 4. The method according to claim 1 further comprising: accessing the first device via a communication interface. 5. An apparatus comprising: a processor; and a non-volatile storage coupled to the processor, the processor configured to: select data to be deleted from a first device; determine whether the selected data exists on a device other than the first device; prompt for a first user input on whether to unselect the selected data in response to determining that the selected data does not exist on a device other than the first device; when the selected data does not exist on a device other than the first device and the first user input indicates to unselect the selected data, unselect the data to be deleted; and when the selected data does not exist on a device other than the first device and the first user input indicates not to unselect the selected data, the processor is further configured to: prompt for a second user input for a storage location to back up the selected data on a device other than the first device; transfer the selected data to the storage location based on the second user input, and delete the selected data from the first device. 6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the first device is one of an mobile device, a portable device, a wearable device, a computer and an internet node. 7. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the processor is further configured to delete the selected data based on determining that the selected data does exist on a device other than the first device. 8. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the processor is further configured to: access the first device via a communication interface. 9. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium carrying one or more sequences of one or more instructions, which when executed by one or more processors, cause a first device to at least perform the following steps: select data to be deleted from non-volatile storage of a second device; determine whether the selected data exists on a device other than the second device; prompt for a first user input on whether to unselect the selected data in response to determining that the selected data does not exist on a device other than the second device; when the selected data does not exist on a device other than the second device and the first user input indicates to unselect the selected data, unselect the data to be deleted; and when the selected data does not exist on a device other than the second device and the first user input indicates not to unselect the selected data, the one or more sequences of one or more instructions cause the first device to further perform: prompt for a second user input for a storage location to back up the selected data on a device other than the second device, transfer the selected data to the storage location based on the second user input, and delete the selected data from the second device. 10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 9 wherein the first device is one of a mobile device, a portable device, a wearable device, a computer and an internet node. 11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 9 wherein the apparatus is further caused to at least delete the selected data based on determining that the selected data does exist on a device other than the second device. 12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 9 wherein the first device is further caused to access the second device via a communication interface.
