Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Articles of wear comprises iron oxide colloidal nanocrystals arranged within chains are described. The chains of nanocrystals display a color that is determined by a strength of a magnetic field applied to the chains of nanocrystals, wherein the color is maintained when the magnetic field is removed.

First claim

That which is claimed is: 1. An apparatus for manipulating a color displayed by an article of wear comprising iron oxide colloidal nanocrystals arranged within chains, the apparatus comprising: a platform comprising a substantially flat surface; and a pulsating electromagnet configured to switch between generating a rapidly fluctuating magnetic field and a non-fluctuating magnetic field; wherein the substantially flat surface comprises a gap therein, and wherein the article of wear comprises a roll of textile that is unrolled proximate a first end of the platform, positioned adjacent the surface of the platform and the gap therein, and re-rolled proximate a second end of the platform. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the rapidly fluctuating magnetic field creates transient currents in the chains of nanocrystals. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the transient currents lead to a softening or melting of materials within the article of wear immediately surrounding the chains of nanocrystals. 4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the pulsating electromagnet is configured to switch to the non-fluctuating magnetic field after the materials have been softened or melted. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the gap is approximately 0.5 inches in width and approximately 8.5 inches in length. 6. An apparatus for manipulating a color displayed by a material or article comprising iron oxide colloidal nanocrystals arranged within chains, the apparatus comprising: a platform configured to support the material or article; a magnetic field source configured to create transient currents in the chains of nanocrystals and/or to produce a magnetic field that is tunable to control the color displayed by the material or article; wherein the platform comprises a substantially flat surface having a gap formed therein, and wherein the material or article comprises a roll of textile that is unrolled proximate a first end of the platform, positioned adjacent the surface of the platform and the gap therein, and re-rolled proximate a second end of the platform. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the transient currents lead to a softening or melting of materials within the article of wear immediately surrounding the chains of nanocrystals. 8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the magnetic field source is configured to produce the tunable magnetic field after the materials have been softened or melted. 9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the gap is approximately 0.5 inches in width and approximately 8.5 inches in length. 10. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the magnetic field source is a pulsating electromagnet. 11. An apparatus for manipulating a color displayed by a material or article comprising iron oxide colloidal nanocrystals arranged within chains, the apparatus comprising: a platform; and a magnetic field source comprising pulsating electromagnets; wherein the magnetic field source is arranged so that a magnetic field produced by the magnetic field source extends across a surface of the platform, and wherein the material or article comprises a roll of textile that is unrolled proximate a first end of the platform, positioned adjacent the surface of the platform, and re-rolled proximate a second end of the platform. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the magnetic field source is a pulsating electromagnet. 13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the pulsating electromagnet is configured to switch between generating a rapidly fluctuating magnetic field and a non-fluctuating magnetic field. 14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the rapidly fluctuating magnetic field creates transient currents in the chains of nanocrystals. 15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the transient currents lead to a softening or melting of materials within the article of wear immediately surrounding the chains of nanocrystals. 16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the pulsating electromagnet is configured to switch to the non-fluctuating magnetic field after the materials have been softened or melted. 17. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the magnetic field source is configured to create transient currents in the chains of nanocrystals and/or to produce a magnetic field that is tunable to control the color displayed by the material or article. 18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the transient currents lead to a softening or melting of materials within the article of wear immediately surrounding the chains of nanocrystals. 19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the magnetic field source is configured to produce the tunable magnetic field after the materials have been softened or melted.
