Official abstract text for this publication.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a hydrogen transport membrane and the composite article itself. More specifically, the invention relates to producing a membrane substrate, wherein the ceramic substrate is coated with a metal oxide slurry, thereby eliminating the need for an activation step prior to plating the ceramic membrane through an electroless plating process. The invention also relates to modifying the pore size and porosity of the substrate by oxidation or reduction of the particles deposited by the metal oxide slurry.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of preparing a slurry employed in the fabrication of a membrane substrate, comprising: milling a metal oxide powder in a solvent, and evaporating a portion of said solvent, adding the milled metal oxide powder to a ceramic powder with a binder and further adding a pore former to form a slurry utilized to deposit metal or metal oxide particles onto a separate ceramic substrate to facilitate an electroless plating process for the formation of a composite hydrogen transport membrane. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metal oxide is a nickel oxide. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ceramic powder is an yttria stabilized zirconia. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition of solids in the slurry is 60-70 wt % yttria-stabilized zirconia, 20-30 wt % nickel oxide and the balance is carbon black. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition of solids in the slurry is 67.6 wt % yttria-stabilized zirconia, 25 wt % nickel oxide and 7.4 wt % carbon black.
