Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Machines, systems and methods for managing quality of service (QoS) in a multi-tenant virtualized computing environment, the method comprising: collecting transmission rate statistics associated with data communicated in a virtual network, wherein at least one virtual switch monitors communications initiated by at least a virtual machine (VM) executed on a host machine serviced by the virtual switch; determining, by way of the virtual switch, profile parameters associated with a first communication initiated by the VM belonging to at least a first group, wherein a connection request is submitted by the virtual switch to a traffic controller to assist in establishing the first communication; classifying the connection request for establishing the first communication according to the profile parameters associated with the first communication; determining a first aggregated transmission rate associated with the VM that initiated the first communication based on the classifying.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for managing quality of service (QoS) in a multi-tenant virtualized computing environment, the method comprising: collecting transmission rate statistics associated with data communicated in a virtual network, wherein at least one virtual switch monitors communications initiated by at least a virtual machine (VM) executed on a host machine serviced by the at least one the virtual switch; determining, by way of the at least one virtual switch, profile parameters associated with a first communication initiated by the VM belonging to at least a first group, wherein a connection request is submitted by the at least one virtual switch to a traffic controller to assist in establishing the first communication; classifying, by way of the traffic controller, the connection request for establishing the first communication according to the profile parameters associated with the first communication; determining a first aggregated transmission rate associated with the VM that initiated the first communication based on the classifying; in response to determining that the first aggregated transmission rate is less than a first threshold, setting a first transmission rate for the first communication to a first rate, in response to determining that the first aggregated transmission rate is above a second threshold, setting the transmission rate for the first communication to a second rate; and wherein the first rate is set based on a first service level agreement associated with the profile parameters for the first communication, and the second rate is set to downgrade the service level agreement associated with the profile parameters for the first communication when the first aggregated traffic rate for the data stream is greater than a threshold rate for the profile parameters. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmission rate statistics are collected by the traffic controller in communication with one or more virtual switches in the virtual network. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the classifying of the connection request is performed by the traffic controller in communication with one or more virtual switches in the virtual network. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmission rate for the first communication is set based on the traffic controller instructing the virtual switch to maintain a transmission rate at either the first rate or the second rate, wherein the virtual switch services requests submitted by the VM that initiated the first communication. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein an indicator is set in association with the first communication to assist at least a physical switch in the physical network to process data packets in the first communication initiated by the VM. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the indicator is a flag included in a header portion of one or more data packets transmitted by way of the first communication. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein in response to the physical switch receiving data packets for transmission, the switch classifies the data packets based on the profile parameters as meeting a threshold (in-profile) or not meeting a threshold (out-of-profile). 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein at least one of the data packets is assigned to a first transmission queue based on a best effort transmission priority, in response to determining that a representative value for a profile associated with the data packet is not found in a data structure including values that are representative of a plurality of different service level profiles. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein at least one of the data packets is assigned to a second transmission queue based on a first service level profile, in response to determining that a representative value for a profile associated with the data packet is found in a data structure including values that are representative of a plurality of different service level profiles. 10. The method of claim 5 , wherein profile parameters associated with a first communication initiated by the VM comprise VN, SN, DN, G 1 , G 2 , DSCP (differentiated service code point), where: VN =virtual network ID; SN, DN =source and destination nodes; G 1 =policy group to which the source node belongs; G 2 =policy group to which the destination node belongs; service level identifier =QoS for a connection established to service the first communication. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein a policy group defines VMs that have common connectivity attributes. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein in a first enforcement phase, a QoS service level is defined by the profile parameters associated with the first communication, such that the QoS service level is enforced by way of instructions submitted from the traffic controller to the virtual switch, prior to the data packets for the first communication are processed by a physical switch. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein in a second enforcement phase, the QoS service level is defined by a service level identifier and is enforced by the physical switch, when processing the data packets in the first communication initiated by the VM. 14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the QoS service level defines maximum transmission bandwidth allowable for a communication initiated by the first VM. 15. A system for managing quality of service (QoS) in a multi-tenant virtualized computing environment, the system comprising: at least one processor; at least one memory device; wherein the at least one processor and at least one memory are configured to implement: an analyzer module configured to collect transmission rate statistics associated with data communicated in a virtual network, wherein at least one virtual switch monitors communications initiated by at least a virtual machine (VM) executed on a host machine serviced by the virtual switch; the virtual switch configured to determine profile parameters associated with a first communication initiated by the VM belonging to at least a first group, wherein a connection request is submitted by the virtual switch to a traffic controller to assist in establishing the first communication; the traffic controller configured to classify the connection request for establishing the first communication according to the profile parameters associated with the first communication; the traffic controller further configured to determine a first aggregated transmission rate associated with the VM that initiated the first communication based on the classifying; wherein in response to determining that the first aggregated transmission rate is less than a first threshold, a first transmission rate is set for the first communication to a first rate, wherein in response to determining that the first aggregated transmission rate is above a second threshold, the transmission rate is set for the first communication to a second rate; and wherein the first rate is set based on a first service level agreement associated with the profile parameters for the first communication, and the second rate is set to downgrade the service level agreement associated with the profile parameters for the first communication when the first aggregated traffic rate for the data stream is greater than a threshold rate for the profile parameters. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the transmission rate statistics are collected by the traffic controller in communication with one or more virtual switches in the virtual network. 17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the classifying of the connection request is performed by the traffic controller in
