The subject invention provides efficient and convenient methods of isolating 9-oxo-10E, 12E-octadecadienoic acid methyl ester (9-KODE methyl ester) from C. versicolor . In addition, the subject invention provides therapeutic uses of Coriolus versicolor extracts, biologically-active chemical substituents isolated from C. versicolor , as well as 9-KODE methyl ester and related compounds. In a preferred embodiment, the subject invention can be used to inhibit the metastatic spread of cancer cells.

We claim: 1. A method for treating cancer or a tumor, comprising administering, to a subject in need of such treatment, an effective amount of a composition comprising 9-oxo-10E, 12E-octadecadienoic acid methyl ester, or a salt thereof, wherein the cancer or tumor is selected from the group consisting of glioblastoma, breast carcinoma, and lung carcinoma. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is a human. 3. A method for treating cancer or a tumor, comprising administering, to a subject in need of such treatment, an effective amount of a composition comprising 9-oxo-10E, 12E-octadecadienoic acid methyl ester, or a salt thereof, wherein the cancer is metastatic cancer and the administration of the composition is used to reduce cancer metastasis. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the subject is a human. 5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the compound inhibits the expression of MMP3. 6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the compound reduces TNF-α, wherein the compound reduces TNF-α production in tumor cells.
