Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Some embodiments provide a method for an application executing on a mobile device. The method renders an animated navigation presentation for output to an external display screen not part of the mobile device. The navigation presentation includes an animated map showing at least a portion of a route to a destination. The method simultaneously displays information regarding a maneuver along the route on a display screen of the mobile device without displaying a same animated map on the mobile device. In some embodiments, the displayed information regarding the maneuver comprises a graphical instruction and a text instruction for a next maneuver along the route.

We claim: 1. For an application executing on a mobile device, a method comprising: rendering an animated navigation presentation and outputting the rendered presentation from the mobile device for display on an external display screen that is not part of the mobile device, the navigation presentation comprising an animated map showing at least a portion of a route to a destination; and simultaneously displaying a navigation instruction for a next maneuver along the route, from a current location of the mobile device, on a display screen of the mobile device without displaying a map on the mobile device. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the external display screen is a display screen of an interactive communication system of a vehicle to which the mobile device is connected. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the navigation instruction for the next maneuver comprises a graphical instruction and a text instruction. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the graphical instruction comprises an arrow indicating a maneuver through an intersection and additional lines indicating additional roads that form the intersection. 5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the text instruction comprises a distance to the maneuver and a description of the maneuver. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein displaying the navigation instruction for the next maneuver comprises updating the distance to the next maneuver at particular threshold distances from the next maneuver. 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising outputting the navigation instruction for the next maneuver to the external display screen when the mobile device is within a threshold distance of the maneuver, wherein the navigation instruction is displayed along with the animated map on the external display screen. 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating a banner comprising route and maneuver information for display over a portion of the animated map on the external display screen. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the route information comprises an estimated arrival time and estimated remaining time and distance. 10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the maneuver information comprises the information displayed on the mobile device presented in a different arrangement. 11. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a program for execution by at least one processing unit of a mobile device, the program comprising sets of instructions for: generating an animated navigation presentation displaying at least a portion of a route to a destination; when the mobile device is not connected to a vehicle's interactive communication system, outputting a first display of the animated navigation presentation to a display screen of the mobile device; and when the mobile device is connected to a vehicle's interactive communication system: displaying navigation instructions for a next maneuver along the route on the display screen of the mobile device without displaying a map on the mobile device's display screen; outputting a second display of the animated navigation presentation to the interactive communication system for output on a display screen of the interactive communication system; and outputting the navigation instruction to the interactive communication system for output on the display screen of the interactive communication system when the mobile device is within a threshold distance of the next maneuver along the route. 12. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the program further comprises a set of instructions for, when the mobile device is connected to the interactive communication system, outputting a selectable control overlaid on the animated navigation presentation, the selectable control for activating a direction list. 13. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the program further comprises a set of instructions for, upon receiving a selection of the selectable control through the interactive communication system, outputting to the vehicle screen a display of a scrollable list of maneuvers to perform along the route. 14. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the set of instructions for outputting the scrollable list comprises a set of instructions for outputting an animation of the scrollable list sliding over the animated navigation presentation. 15. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a program for execution by at least one processing unit of a mobile device, the program comprising sets of instructions for: generating an animated navigation presentation of a route for display on a first display screen; generating an instructions panel describing a maneuver along the route for concurrent display on a second display screen, the second display screen not displaying a map; and only when the mobile device is within a threshold distance of the maneuver, outputting the generated instructions panel for display on a portion of the first display screen along with the animated navigation presentation. 16. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the program comprises a set of instructions for, when the mobile device is not within a threshold distance of the maneuver, generating and outputting a banner for display on the first display screen, the banner comprising information also displayed in the instructions panel. 17. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the first display screen comprises a display screen of a vehicle's interactive communication system and the second display screen comprises a display screen of the mobile device. 18. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the generated instructions panel describing the maneuver comprises a graphical representation of the maneuver and text instructions describing the maneuver. 19. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the text instructions comprise a regularly updated distance to the next maneuver. 20. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the maneuver is a next maneuver along the route. 21. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 20 , wherein the next maneuver is a first maneuver and the threshold distance is a first threshold distance, wherein when a second maneuver that follows the first maneuver is within a second threshold distance of the first maneuver, the generated instructions panel describes both the first maneuver and the second maneuver.
