A surface platform for a conveyor belt includes a platform member having an upper surface and a rail member at one side of the upper surface. The upper surface has a first portion adjacent the rail member, a second portion adjacent the first portion, and a third portion adjacent the second portion. The second portion extends upward at a distance and in a direction such that when an article is placed on the platform member in contact with the rail the article extends to, and no further than, the second portion. The first portion may be horizontal or curved.

I claim: 1. A conveyor belt for conveying articles having a width comprising: an interconnected series of relatively pivotable body members; and a plurality of platform members, each platform member attached to a respective one of the body members, each platform member having an upper surface and a substantially vertical rail member extending upward at one side of the upper surface, the upper surface having a first portion adjacent the rail member, a second portion adjacent the first portion, and a third portion adjacent the second portion, the first portion extending from the rail member toward the second portion at least to a center of the platform member, the second portion extending upward in a direction from the first portion toward the third portion, the first and second portions configured relative to the width of the article such that when placed on the platform member in contact with the rail the article extends to and no further than the second portion. 2. The conveyor belt of claim 1 , wherein the rail member has a height relative to the first portion, and the second portion extends upwardly less than the height of the rail member. 3. The conveyor belt of claim 1 , wherein the second portion extends in a plane at an angle of about 5 to about 30 degrees relative to the first portion. 4. The conveyor belt of claim 1 , wherein the rail member extends upwardly about 0.25 to about 1.00 inches relative to the first portion. 5. The conveyor belt of claim 1 , wherein the platform member includes spring like connecting members to connect the platform member to a conveyor body member. 6. The conveyor belt of claim 1 , wherein the first portion extends from the rail member substantially horizontally. 7. The conveyor belt of claim 1 , wherein the first portion extends from the rail member with a convex curvature. 8. The conveyor belt of claim 7 , wherein the first portion extends a distance about at least half of a width of the platform member. 9. The conveyor belt of claim 1 , wherein the platform member is configured so that center of gravity of the conveyed article is in substantial alignment with a middle of the platform member. 10. The surface platform for a conveying an article having a width on a conveyor belt comprising: a platform member having an upper surface and a substantially vertical rail member extending upward at one side of the upper surface, the upper surface having a first portion adjacent the rail member, a second portion adjacent the first portion, and a third portion adjacent the second portion, the first portion extending from the rail member toward the second portion at least to a center of the platform member, the second portion extending upward in a direction from the first portion toward the third portion, the first and second portions configured relative to the width of the article such that when placed on the platform member in contact with the rail the article extends to and no further than the second portion. 11. The surface platform of claim 10 , wherein the rail member has a height relative to the first portion, and the second portion extends upwardly less than the height of the rail member. 12. The surface platform of claim 10 , wherein the second portion extends in a plane at an angle of about 5 to about 30 degrees relative to the first portion. 13. The surface platform of claim 10 , wherein the rail member extends upwardly about 0.25 to about 1.00 inches relative to the first portion. 14. The surface platform of claim 10 , wherein the platform member includes spring like connecting members to connect the platform member to a conveyor body member. 15. The surface platform of claim 10 , wherein the first portion extends from the rail member substantially horizontally. 16. The surface platform of claim 10 , wherein the first portion extends from the rail member with a convex curvature. 17. The surface platform of claim 16 , wherein the first portion extends a distance about at least half of a width of the platform member. 18. The surface platform of claim 10 , wherein the platform member is configured so that center of gravity of the conveyed article is in substantial alignment with a middle of the platform member.
