Abstract

A seat for a motor vehicle includes a seatbelt integrated into a seat back of the seat and a seatbelt mechanism for providing access to the seatbelt. The seat further includes an extended base attached to the seat, a raised and curved section of the extended base for transitioning the seatbelt from a vertical orientation inside the seatback to a horizontal orientation for use, an arcuate slot atop the extended base, the seatbelt being threaded through the arcuate slot, the arcuate slot preventing the seatbelt from becoming tangled and misaligned, a garnish for covering the seatbelt mechanism, a fastener, and a cap for covering the fastener. The fastener fastens the garnish and the cap to the extended base.

First claim

What is claimed is:

1. A seat for a motor vehicle, comprising:
a seatbelt integrated into a seat back of the seat; and
a seatbelt mechanism for providing access to the seatbelt, comprising:
an extended base attached to the seat back;
a curved section of the extended base for transitioning the seatbelt from a vertical orientation inside the seat back to a horizontal orientation for use;
an arcuate slot atop the extended base, the seatbelt being threaded through the arcuate slot, the arcuate slot preventing the seatbelt from becoming tangled and misaligned;
a garnish for covering the seatbelt mechanism;
a fastener; and
a cap for covering the fastener, wherein the cap comprises:
a base portion attached to the extended base of the seatbelt mechanism;
a living hinge; and
an outer cover, the outer cover folding over and covering the base portion;

wherein the fastener fastens the garnish and the cap to the extended base.

2. The seat for a motor vehicle of claim 1 further comprising:
a cap opening in the garnish for receiving the cap, the cap opening having a hook surface.

3. The seat for a motor vehicle of claim 2 wherein the outer cover of the cap further comprises:
a tapered end, the tapered end creating an interference fit with the hook surface of the cap opening to fixedly attach the tapered end of the outer cover to the garnish.

4. The seat for a motor vehicle of claim 1 wherein the fastener comprises a tapping screw.

5. The seat for a motor vehicle of claim 1 wherein the garnish further comprises:
an arcuate opening, the arcuate slot of the seatbelt mechanism being accessible through the arcuate opening of the garnish.

6. A seatbelt system of a seat for a motor vehicle, the seatbelt system comprising: the seatbelt mechanism having an extended base:
a cap comprising:
a base portion;
a living hinge; and
an outer cover;

a garnish having a cap opening in the garnish for receiving the cap, the cap opening having a hook surface;
wherein the cap and the garnish are secured to the seatbelt mechanism;
wherein the outer cover is configured to fold over and cover the base portion, the outer cover having a tapered end, the tapered end creating an interference fit with the hook surface of the cap opening to fixedly attach the tapered end of the outer cover to the garnish.

7. The seatbelt system of claim 6 wherein the base portion of the cap is attached to the extended base of the seatbelt mechanism.

8. The seatbelt system of claim 7 wherein the base portion is attached to the extended base with a fastener.

9. The seatbelt system of claim 8 wherein the fastener is a tapping screw.
