An article is described comprising a substrate, a pressure sensitive polyacrylate primer layer disposed on the substrate, and an adhesive layer disposed onto the primer layer; wherein the adhesive layer comprises a polyacrylate component. The adhesive layer is typically further bonded to a second substrate or a release liner. In some embodiments, at least one substrate further comprises a microstructured surface layer and the primer layer is bonded to the microstructured surface layer. In other embodiments, the adhesive layer is further bonded to a (e.g. post) structure. In some embodiments, the articles are optical films or optical film stacks. Methods of making an (e.g. adhesive coated) article are also described.

What is claimed is: 1. An article comprising a substrate, a pressure sensitive polyacrylate primer layer disposed on the substrate wherein the pressure sensitive polyacrylate primer layer consists essentially of at least 80% polyacrylate and a nitrogen containing polymer, and an adhesive layer disposed onto the primer layer; wherein the adhesive layer comprises a polyacrylate component. 2. The article of claim 1 wherein the adhesive layer is further bonded to a second substrate or a release liner. 3. The article of claim 1 wherein at least one substrate further comprises a microstructured surface layer and the primer layer is bonded to the microstructured surface layer. 4. The article of claim 3 wherein the microstructured surface layer comprises a plurality of peaks and the peaks are free of matte particles. 5. The article of claim 1 wherein the substrate is an optical substrate. 6. The article of claim 1 wherein the adhesive layer comprises a cured adhesive layer comprising an interpenetrating network of the reaction product of the polyacrylate and a polymerizable monomer. 7. The article of claim 6 wherein the cured adhesive layer has an elastic modulus ranging from 100 to 2000 MPa at 25 C. 8. The article of claim 6 wherein the polymerizable monomer of the adhesive layer comprises a monomer comprising functional groups and a molecular weight less than 150 g/mole per functional group. 9. The article of claim 8 wherein the polymerizable monomer of the cured adhesive layer is a cationically polymerizable epoxy resin or a free-radically polymerizable monomer. 10. The article of claim 6 wherein the cured adhesive layer comprises about 35 wt-% to about 75 wt-% of the polyacrylate. 11. The article of claim 6 wherein the cured adhesive layer is free of a nitrogen-containing monomer or polymer. 12. The article of claim 1 wherein the primer layer comprises at least 85 wt-% of the polyacrylate. 13. The article claim 1 wherein the polyacrylate of the adhesive is a pressure sensitive adhesive. 14. The article of claim 1 wherein the polyacrylate of the primer, adhesive, or combination thereof comprises at least 40 wt-% of monomeric repeat units comprising branched C4-C12 alkyl groups. 15. The article of claim 1 wherein the nitrogen-containing polymer of the pressure sensitive polyacrylate primer layer comprises at least one nitrogen atom comprising a free pair of electrons. 16. The article of claim 15 wherein the primer layer comprises up to 5 wt-% of one or more nitrogen-containing polymers. 17. The article of claim 16 wherein the nitrogen-containing polymer is a homopolymer or copolymer of vinylcaprolactam, vinylpyrollidone, or a combination thereof. 18. An film stack comprising a first film comprising a pressure sensitive polyacrylate primer layer disposed on the first optical film wherein the pressure sensitive polyacrylate primer layer consists essentially of at least 80% polyacrylate and a nitrogen containing polymer, and an adhesive layer disposed onto the primer layer; wherein the adhesive layer comprises a polyacrylate component; and a second film bonded to the adhesive layer. 19. The film stack of claim 18 wherein the first film comprises a plurality of structures on a first surface bonded to a second film such that a portion of the structures penetrate a major surface of the adhesive layer and a separation is provided between the major surface of the adhesive layer and the first surface. 20. The film stack of claim 19 wherein less than 50% of the total surface area of the major surface of the adhesive layer is in contact with the structures.
