Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A paper web and a method of marking a paper web. The paper web includes a surface having a plurality of sections. At least one section of the plurality of sections has a plurality of positions. The plurality of positions each have an equal length and are obtained by subdividing the at least one section. The paper web also includes ink applied to the surface of the paper web at some of the plurality of positions. The method includes applying a first mark and a second mark to a paper web. The first mark has a start position and is coded to convey an identifier for the paper web. The second mark includes a start position and is coded to indicate a position on the paper web. The start position of the second mark is a predetermined distance after the start position of the first mark.

We claim: 1. A method of marking a paper web, the method comprising: (A) applying a plurality of first marks to a paper web in a sequence, each of the first marks: (a) being applied over a first mark length in a machine direction of the paper web; (b) having (i) a start position and (ii) a plurality of positions of equal length including a first position, a second position, a penultimate position, a plurality of intermediate positions between the second and penultimate positions, and a last position; and (c) being applied by: (i) affixing an indicator in the first position and the second position to indicate the beginning of the mark; (ii) selectively affixing at least one indicator in the plurality of intermediate positions, the indicators affixed in the intermediate positions being coded to convey an identifier for the paper web; and (iii) affixing an indicator in the penultimate position and the last position to indicate the end of the mark, wherein the distance between the start position of each of the first marks is a first predetermined distance from the start position of a next one of the plurality of first marks in the sequence; and (B) applying a plurality of second marks to the paper web in a sequence, each of the second marks: (a) being applied over a second mark length in the machine direction of the paper web; (b) being adjacent to one of the plurality of second marks in the machine direction of the paper web; (c) having (i) a start position and (ii) a plurality of positions of equal length including a first position, a second position, a penultimate position, a plurality of intermediate positions between the second and penultimate positions, and a last position; and (d) being applied by: (i) affixing an indicator in the first position and the second position to indicate the beginning of the mark; (ii) selectively affixing at least one indicator in the plurality of intermediate positions, the indicators affixed in the intermediate positions being coded to indicate a position on the paper web; and (iii) affixing an indicator in the penultimate position and the last position to indicate the end of the mark, wherein the distance between the start position of each of the second marks is a second predetermined distance from the start position of a next one of the plurality of second marks in the sequence. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first predetermined distance is from about three hundred feet to about one thousand feet. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first predetermined distance is about five hundred feet. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of applying the plurality of first marks includes applying ink as the indicator in the positions of the first mark in which an indicator is affixed. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the ink is applied as a dash. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the dash is less than about six inches long. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the dash is about one and a half inches long. 8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first mark length is about sixteen feet. 9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first mark length is subdivided into from about sixteen positions to about sixty-eight positions. 10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first mark length is subdivided into about thirty-eight positions. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of apply the plurality of second marks includes applying ink as the indicator in the positions of the second mark in which an indicator is affixed. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the ink is applied as a dash. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the dash is less than about six inches long. 14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the dash is about one and a half inches long. 15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second mark length is about sixteen feet. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second mark length is subdivided into from about sixteen positions to about sixty-eight positions. 17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second mark length is subdivided into about thirty-eight positions. 18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second predetermined distance is from about three hundred feet to about one thousand feet. 19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second predetermined distance is about five hundred feet. 20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first predetermined distance and the second predetermined distance are the same. 21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the start position of each of the plurality of second marks is a third predetermined distance after the start position of an adjacent first mark. 22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the third predetermined distance is from about one hundred fifty feet to about five hundred feet. 23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the third predetermined distance is about two hundred fifty feet.
