The invention claimed is: 1. A bicycle wheel comprising: a hub; a rim coupled to the hub; and a cover coupled to the rim and including a sidewall defining a bead seat engageable by a tire bead, wherein a void is defined between the cover and the rim, the void configured to allow the cover to flex in response to an impact on an exterior surface of the cover. 2. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , further comprising a tire including the tire bead and a casing having tread and defining a sidewall of the tire, and wherein the cover is positioned to engage the tire bead and the sidewall. 3. The bicycle wheel of claim 2 , wherein the cover defines an exposed, concave surface disposed on a lateral side of the cover. 4. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the rim is formed of a metal or carbon fiber, and wherein the cover is formed of plastic or an elastomeric material. 5. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the cover includes non-metallic material, and wherein the non-metallic material is resilient and the cover is stretchably attached to the rim. 6. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the rim and the cover include complementary engagement features to attach the cover to the rim. 7. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the rim includes a first annular feature and the cover includes a second annular feature, and wherein the first annular feature and the second annular feature are engaged with each other to attach the cover to the rim. 8. The bicycle wheel of claim 7 , wherein the rim includes an annular wall, wherein the first annular feature includes one of an annular projection extending from the annular wall and an annular channel disposed in the annular wall, and wherein the second annular feature includes the other of the annular projection and the annular channel. 9. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the cover includes another sidewall such that the sidewalls are disposed adjacent lateral sides of the rim, and wherein the cover is continuous between the sidewalls. 10. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the rim includes a first material and the cover includes a second material that has a lower hardness than the first material. 11. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the cover includes a ring portion interconnecting opposite sidewalls of the cover, and wherein each of the sidewalls includes an exterior surface and a wipe seal contiguous with the exterior surface, and wherein the wipe seal smoothly transitions to an exterior surface of the rim to seal the void. 12. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall includes a wipe seal contiguous with an exterior surface of the sidewall, and wherein the wipe seal transitions to and engages an exterior surface of the rim. 13. The bicycle wheel of claim 1 , wherein the rim is surrounded by the cover. 14. A bicycle wheel comprising: a hub; a rim coupled to the hub; a cover coupled to the rim and including a sidewall defining a bead seat engageable by a tire bead, the cover having first and second free ends; and a tightening mechanism coupled to the cover and configured to draw or pull the first and second free ends toward one another and relative to the rim to secure the cover on the rim. 15. The bicycle wheel of claim 14 , wherein the rim includes a first material and the cover including a second material that has a lower hardness than the first material. 16. The bicycle wheel of claim 14 , wherein the cover includes another sidewall defining a bead seat such that the sidewalls are disposed adjacent lateral sides of the rim, and wherein the cover further has a ring portion defined between the first and second bead seats, the bicycle wheel further comprising a cable positioned in the ring portion and secured to the tightening mechanism such that the tightening mechanism is configured to draw ends of the cable toward each other to secure the cover on the rim. 17. The bicycle wheel of claim 16 , wherein the tightening mechanism includes a winch configured to draw the ends of the cable together such that the ends of the cable wrap around the winch. 18. The bicycle wheel of claim 14 , wherein the tightening mechanism includes a winch configured to draw the first and second free ends together, and wherein the winch is secured to an actuator mounted for rotation in an opening of the rim. 19. The bicycle wheel of claim 18 , wherein an exposed portion of the actuator extends through and is accessible from outside the rim. 20. The bicycle wheel of claim 19 , wherein the actuator includes a valve mechanism configured to control passage of gas into and out of the interior volume of a tire attachable to the bicycle wheel. 21. The bicycle wheel of claim 14 , wherein the tightening mechanism includes a worm drive clamp mechanism having a first band that is connected to the cover adjacent the first free end, and a second band that is connected to the cover adjacent the second free end, and wherein the first band defines a female portion of a threaded system, and the second band contains a captive male threaded member actuatable to engage the female threaded portion and move the free ends of the cover toward or away from one another to circumferentially tighten or loosen the cover relative to the rim.
