Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The invention relates to a medical device and a method of using it. The device is a stent which can be percutaneously deliverable with (or on) an endovascular catheter or via other surgical or other techniques and then expanded. The stent is configured to have a central portion defined by “open” cells and at least two end portions, defined by “closed” cells, spaced apart and directly connected to the distal and proximal ends of the central portion of the stent. The stent may also optionally have a covering or a lattice with openings.

What is claimed is: 1. A stent comprising: a body having distal and proximal ends and defining a central lumen along a longitudinal axis, the body having an insertion configuration with a reduced profile and a deployed configuration with an enlarged profile greater than the insertion profile, the body comprising: a proximal circumferential row arranged at the proximal end of the body and a distal circumferential row arranged at the distal end of the body, and a plurality of helical rows extending helically about the longitudinal axis, axially interposed between and directly connected to the proximal circumferential row and the distal circumferential row, the plurality of helical rows having uniform apex angles and uniform apex amplitude along a length thereof to form a uniform apex geometry, wherein an intermediate portion of the plurality of helical rows defines a plurality of open cells formed by intermittent axial connectors between adjacent turns of the plurality of helical rows, and at least one of the proximal circumferential row and the distal circumferential row defines a plurality of closed cells with one of the plurality of helical rows, the plurality of closed cells including a plurality of closed cell connectors extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis. 2. The stent of claim 1 , wherein a proximal circumferential member includes one of the plurality of helical rows connected with the proximal circumferential row, and a distal circumferential member includes one of the plurality of helical rows connected with the distal circumferential row. 3. The stent of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of closed cell connectors form connections between internal apices of at least one of the plurality of helical rows and at least one of the proximal circumferential row and the distal circumferential row. 4. The stent of claim 3 , wherein lengths of the closed cell connectors vary. 5. The stent of claim 4 , wherein lengths of the closed cell connectors uniformly increase along a circumferential direction of stent. 6. The stent of claim 5 , wherein the distal circumferential row and the proximal circumferential row are located, respectively, at the distal and proximal ends of the stent and define planes orthogonal to the longitudinal axis. 7. The stent of claim 4 , wherein the closed cell connector having the shortest length has a variable width that defines a notch. 8. The stent of claim 3 , wherein undulations of the plurality of helical rows have peaks with a connector extending outwardly from an apex and have valleys with a connector extending into another apex. 9. The stent of claim 3 , wherein the closed cells are defined by the closed cell connectors extending between internal apices within at least one of the proximal circumferential row and the distal circumferential row. 10. The stent of claim 9 , wherein at least two of the closed cells have irregular hexagonal shapes. 11. The stent of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the closed cells has a substantially rhombic shape. 12. The stent of claim 9 , wherein the closed cells are defined by having six sides or less and open cells are defined by having more than six sides. 13. The stent of claim 2 , wherein the one of the plurality of helical rows connected with the proximal circumferential row has constant amplitude and the one of the plurality of helical rows connected with the distal circumferential row has constant amplitude. 14. The stent of claim 1 , wherein a first group of the closed cells is substantially disposed around a circumference at the distal end of the stent, and a second group of the closed cells is substantially disposed around a circumference at the proximal end of the stent. 15. The stent of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of helical rows comprises variable width struts. 16. The stent of claim 1 , wherein a number of apices in the at least one of the distal circumferential row and the proximal circumferential row is equal to the number of apices in each of the plurality of helical rows. 17. The stent of claim 16 , wherein apices of at least one of the distal circumferential row and the proximal circumferential row are out of phase with apices of the plurality of helical rows by about a half of a wave period. 18. The stent of claim 1 , wherein the intermittent axial connectors include a plurality of axial connectors comprising periodically spaced connections between adjacent rows of the plurality of helical rows. 19. The stent of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of axial connectors extend substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis. 20. The stent of claim 19 , wherein lengths and widths of the axial connectors are substantially uniform. 21. The stent of claim 19 , wherein undulations of the plurality of helical rows have peaks where the axial connector extends from the apex and have valleys where the axial connector extends into the apex, and wherein each of the axial connectors comprises a strut extending from a peak to a valley or a valley to a peak. 22. The stent of claim 1 , wherein the body in the deployed configuration has a diameter of d 1 and the body in the insertion configuration has a diameter of d 2 , where the ratio of d 1 :d 2 is greater than about 2:1. 23. The stent of claim 1 , wherein the stent comprises a shape-memory alloy. 24. The stent of claim 23 , wherein the shape-memory alloy is nitinol. 25.
