An advancement system for an in ovo injection apparatus is provided. Such an advancement system is configured to advance an egg carrier carrying a plurality of avian eggs to an injection assembly. The advancement system includes a guide assembly configured to receive the egg carrier and provide support thereto during advancement of the egg carrier. A manual advancement device slidingly engages the guide assembly such that the manual advancement device is movable along the guide assembly. The manual advancement device is capable of interacting with a trailing end of the egg carrier to advance the egg carrier to an injection position. At least one stop is positioned to interact with the manual advancement device during advancement of the egg carrier so as to prevent progression of the manual advancement device beneath the injection assembly, thereby locating the egg carrier at the injection position. An associated method is also provided.

That which is claimed: 1. An in ovo injection apparatus capable of injecting a plurality of avian eggs carried by an egg carrier having a leading end and a trailing end, the apparatus comprising: a frame; an injection assembly having a plurality of injection devices and operably engaged with the frame, each injection device being configured to inject a respective avian egg when aligned therewith; and an advancement system operably engaged with the frame and configured to advance an egg carrier carrying a plurality of avian eggs to the injection assembly for injection thereof, the advancement system comprising a guide assembly configured to receive the egg carrier and provide support thereto during advancement of the egg carrier, the guide assembly having a pair of side rails configured to provide lateral support to the egg carrier during advancement thereof to the injection position, the side rails being arranged in parallel and being movable to a plurality of positions to allow various parallel spacing therebetween for accepting egg carriers of various dimensions, each side rail defining a series of cavities being adjacent one another and being varyingly positioned with respect to a width of the side rail, each cavity being capable of receiving a respective post extending from the frame to provide a fixed spacing between the side rails, the side rails being movable with respect to the posts for altering the spacing between the side rails. 2. A method of advancing an egg carrier through an in ovo injection apparatus for injection of a plurality of avian eggs carried by the egg carrier, the method comprising: providing an in ovo injection apparatus comprising a guide assembly operably engaged to a frame and having a pair of side rails configured to provide lateral support to an egg carrier during advancement thereof to an injection position, the side rails being arranged in parallel and being movable to a plurality of positions to allow various parallel spacing therebetween for accepting egg carriers of various dimensions; adjusting the parallel spacing between the side rails by positioning one of a series of cavities defined by each side rail to receive a respective post extending from the frame so as to provide a fixed spacing between the side rails, the cavities being adjacent and varyingly positioned with respect to a width of the side rail; engaging an egg carrier with the guide assembly; and advancing the egg carrier along the guide assembly toward an injection assembly of the in ovo injection apparatus, to an injection position beneath the injection assembly.
