Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods provide a platform of at least partially pre-defined panel templates that a user can select and manipulate to customize the visualization of data of interest within an interactive dashboard. Each panel template may be defined by a developer in advance to include a set of inputs, a query, and a visualization. Users may select pre-defined panel templates for inclusion in the dashboard, and when the dashboard is displayed, use the set of inputs of a particular panel to specify criteria that may further define the corresponding query and/or the visualization of data produced by executing the query. An electronic dashboard has a combination of available panel templates that may be selected and arranged according to a desired page layout or design. One or more reusable panel templates may be provided to a user of an enterprise application for data analysis and visualization.

What is claimed is: 1. A computer-implemented method comprising: receiving a selection of one or more identifiers of panel templates among a plurality of identifiers of panel templates, wherein each identifier of the plurality of identifiers is associated with a panel template that includes a query and a format for displaying an associated panel in a dashboard, wherein selecting the one or more identifiers of panel templates comprises: dragging each identifier of the one or more identifiers of panel templates onto a representation of a dashboard in a displayed dashboard-creation page; and dropping each dragged identifier at an associated position in the dashboard-creation page, each associated position being indicative of where the associated panel appears when the dashboard is displayed; in response to selecting an identifier of the one or more identifiers of panel templates: adding a reference to an associated panel template of the selected identifier in the associated panel in the dashboard-creation page; and adding to the dashboard-creation page an indication of the panel associated with the selected identifier; in response to a user action for a particular panel in the dashboard-creation page, executing a query included in a panel template referenced by the particular panel to generate data for display in that particular panel within the dashboard-creation page; and visualizing, within the particular panel within the dashboard-creation page, data resulting from execution of the query in the panel template referenced by the particular panel. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the panel template referenced by each panel includes a definition of an input that (i) defines an aspect of or constrains the query in the panel template, or (ii) that affects the panel's display of the data generated by executing the query in that panel template. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the panel template referenced by each panel includes a definition of a local input that defines an aspect of or constrains the query in the panel template. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the panel template referenced by each panel includes a definition of a local input that affects the panel's display of the data generated by executing the query in that panel template. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the panel templates for a plurality of the panels in the dashboard each include a same definition of a global input that defines an aspect of or constrains the queries in the panel templates. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the panel templates for a plurality of the panels in the dashboard each include a same definition of a global input that affects how the plurality of the panels display the data generated by executing the queries in their respective panel templates. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the panel template referenced by a panel includes a definition of a local input that is represented by a graphical control element located inside the panel on the displayed dashboard, and wherein an entry for the local input can be received through the graphical control element. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the panel templates for a plurality of the panels in the dashboard each include a same definition of a global input, wherein the global input is represented by a graphical control element located outside the plurality of panels on the displayed dashboard, and wherein an entry for the global input can be received through the graphical control element. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein panels in dashboards that reference a particular panel template are updated automatically when the particular panel template is updated. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of each of the panels is one or more displayed labels for each of the panels in the dashboard-creation page. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of each of the panels in the dashboard-creation page includes, for each panel, an indication of the query and the format specified by that panel's panel template. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of each of the panels in the dashboard-creation page includes, for each panel, an indication of the query and the format specified by that panel's panel template, and wherein the query and the format is user-editable in the dashboard-creation page. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the query included within each panel template includes a search of time-series data or events derived from any of: log data, messages, network packet data, performance measurements, or sensor measurements. 14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the query included within each panel template corresponds to a search of machine data. 15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the query included within each panel template corresponds to a search of log data. 16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the format for displaying the visualization of data specified in a panel's referenced panel template corresponds to a bar chart, a pie chart, a line graph, a scatter plot, a bubble chart, data visualization, or a table. 17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving, in the dashboard-creation page, a selection of a layout, a sequence, a shape, or a size for display of the associated panels of the selected identifier in the displayed dashboard. 18. The method of claim 1 , wherein an identifier of a panel template is associated with a memory pointer to the panel template or an identifier or tag for the panel template. 19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the panel template for one or more of the panels includes a definition of an input that (i) defines an aspect of or constrains the query in the panel template, or (ii) that affects the panel's display of the data generated by executing the query in that panel template, and wherein the input is associated with a memory pointer to the definition of the input or an identifier or tag for the definition of the input. 20. The method of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of the panels are each defined by a panel template that includes a definition of a user input that affects the query specified in that panel template or the format specified in that panel template, wherein the definition of the user input in each panel template is associated with a pointer to or identifier for the definition of the user input, and wherein the method further comprises determining that the user input is a global input when two panel templates include the same pointer or identifier. 21. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to perform functions for: receiving a selection of one or more identifiers of panel templates among a plurality of identifiers of panel templates, wherein each identifier of the plurality of identifiers is associated with a panel template that includes a query and a format for displaying an associated panel in a dashboard, wherein selecting the one or more identifiers of panel templates comprises: dragging each identifier of the one or more identifiers of panel templates onto a representation of a dashboard in a displayed dashboard-creation page; and dropping each dragged identifier at an associated position in the dashboard-creation page, each associated position being indicative of where the associated panel appears when the dashboard is displayed; in response to selecting an identifier of the one or more identifiers of panel templates: adding a reference to an associated panel template of the selected id
