Methods for cleaving an optical fiber that extends from a ferrule are provided herein. The ferrule can be aligned on a first side of a scribe wire and an unconstrained end of the optical fiber on a second side of the scribe wire. Tension can be applied to the scribe wire with the optical fiber. Relative motion between the scribe wire and the optical fiber can be caused, while the tension is applied with the optical fiber. The scribe wire and the optical fiber can be separated. A fiber optic shard can be cleaved from the optical fiber. The fiber optic shard may include the unconstrained end of the optical fiber.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for cleaving an optical fiber that extends from a ferrule, the method comprising: aligning the ferrule on a first side of a scribe wire and an unconstrained end of the optical fiber on a second side of the scribe wire; applying a predetermined amount of tension to the scribe wire; deflecting the tensioned scribe wire with the optical fiber to apply additional tension to the scribe wire; moving the optical fiber along a length of the scribe wire while the additional tension is applied to the scribe wire with the optical fiber, wherein the motion of the optical fiber along the length of the scribe wire defines a scribe path; creating a void in the optical fiber as the optical fiber moves along the length of the scribe wire; and pulling the scribe wire parallel to the axis of the optical fiber by moving the optical fiber along a separation path generally orthogonal to the scribe path wherein the tension of the scribe wire resists the pulling by the optical fiber causing the void to grow, or a crack to propagate from the void, to provide a complete cleave through the optical fiber, whereby a fiber optic shard comprising the unconstrained end of the optical fiber is cleaved from the optical fiber. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving the fiber optic shard with a shard container. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined amount of tension is less than about 2 lbs. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scribe wire has a diameter that is between about 50 μm and about 800 μm. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scribe path is substantially parallel to an end face of the ferrule. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the predetermined amount of tension comprises stretching the scribe wire along a scribe path. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined amount of tension is between about 0.25 lbs (about 1.1 N) and about 1.5 lbs (about 6.7 N). 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein moving the optical fiber along the length of the scribe wire removes material from the optical fiber to create the void. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the additional tension decreases as the scribe wire relaxes into the void created by moving the optical fiber along the length of the scribe wire. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the propagation of the crack is generally aligned with the scribe path.
