A door opening and closing apparatus includes a rail module including: a rail member extending along a front-and-rear direction; a drive device mounted on the rail member; and a supporting member coupled to a closing cable a part of which is wound around the rotating drum and that is hung on a closing inversion member and an opening cable a part of which is wound around the rotating drum and that is hung on an opening inversion member. The rail module is provided with the drive device fastened to an outside of a vehicle body such that a part of the drive device goes inside the vehicle body through an opening provided on the vehicle body. An outer diameter of the rotating drum of the drive device is made smaller than a maximum diameter of a deceleration mechanism for making the rotating drum rotate forward and backward.

The invention claimed is: 1. A door opening and closing apparatus comprising a rail module including: a rail member extending along a longitudinal direction of a vehicle body; a drive device mounted on the rail member and including a rotating drum; and a supporting member, for supporting a door, coupled to: a closing cable, a part of which is wound around the rotating drum and that is hung on a first pulley provided on one end portion of the rail member; an opening cable, a part of which is wound around the rotating drum and that is hung on a second pulley provided on another end portion of the rail member, the supporting member being configured to move along a longitudinal direction of the rail member by rotating the rotating drum of the drive device, the door opening and closing apparatus moving the door to open and close with movement of the supporting member, and, wherein the supporting member includes a first support base including a first fastening piece, and a second support base including a second fastening piece, the first and second fastening pieces extending substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal direction and extending from the first support base and the second support base respectively, wherein the first support base and the second support base are coupled to each other via the first and second fastening pieces, wherein the rail member of the rail module is fastened to an outside surface of the vehicle body, a part of the drive device is arranged inside the vehicle body through an opening provided on the vehicle body, and an outer diameter of the rotating drum of the drive device is smaller than a maximum diameter of a deceleration mechanism for making the rotating drum rotate forward and backward, wherein the supporting member is directly connected to the rail member and is coupled to a coupling portion to which the opening cable is directly coupled, the coupling portion is configured to swing around a shaft extending along a height direction of the vehicle body, and the coupling portion is coupled to the supporting member via the shaft.
