Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An automatic parking brake for a truck mounted brake cylinder. The automatic parking brake includes rod that is interconnected to a piston of the brake cylinder and can prevent the piston from returning to the brakes releases position. The rod is controlled by locking nut that will rotate if the rod moves axially through the locking nut and a locking sleeve that is moveable between a locked position, where the locking sleeve engages the locking nut and prevents from the nut from rotating, and a released position, where the locking sleeve is disengages from the locking nut and the locking nut is free to rotate. A spring provides a force biasing the locking nut into the locked position, and brake pipe pressure biases the locking sleeve into the released position.

What is claimed is: 1. An automatic parking brake for a truck mounted brake cylinder having a brake cylinder piston and an actuator driven having the brake cylinder piston to actuate the braking system of a rail car, comprising: a housing having a port for receiving brake pipe pressure; a locking nut positioned in the housing for rotational movement; a rod extending through the locking nut for interconnection at one end to the piston of the brake cylinder separately from and to one side of the actuator, wherein the rod is connected to the locking nut via threads so that the locking nut will rotate if the rod moves axially through the locking nut; a locking sleeve moveable between a locked position, where the locking sleeve engages the locking nut and prevents from the nut from rotating, and a released position, where the locking sleeve is disengages from the locking nut and the locking nut is free to rotate; a spring providing a force biasing the locking nut into the locked position; and a parking brake piston coupled to the locking sleeve by a connecting stem; a brake pipe pressure chamber in communication with the port and positioned between the parking brake piston and the locking sleeve to bias the parking brake piston and the connecting stem to move the locking sleeve into the released position if the brake pipe pressure in the chamber exceeds the force of the spring. 2. The parking brake of claim 1 , wherein the housing is mounted to a non-pressure head of the brake cylinder and the rod is connected directly to the piston. 3. The parking brake of claim 1 , wherein the housing is mounted to a non-pressure head of the brake cylinder by a trunnion and the rod is connected to the piston via a linkage. 4. The parking brake of claim 1 , further comprising a manual release interconnected to the locking sleeve and rotatable from a first position, where the locking sleeve is free to engage the locking nut, and a second position where the locking sleeve is moved by the manual release into the released position. 5. The parking brake of claim 4 , wherein the manual release is interconnected to a hand brake lever so that the manual release rotates from the first to the second position when the hand brake lever is moved from a hand brake released position to a hand brake applied position. 6. The parking brake of claim 5 , wherein the manual release is interconnected to the hand brake lever via a link having an actuator that contacts a cam associated with the manual release. 7. The parking brake of claim 6 , wherein the manual release is interconnected to the hand brake lever via a post having an actuator on one end that contacts a cam associated with the manual release when the hand brake lever impacts an opposing end of the post. 8. The parking brake of claim 1 , further comprising: a second housing having a second port for receiving brake pipe pressure; a second locking nut positioned in the second housing for rotational movement; a second rod extending through the second locking nut and interconnected at one end to the piston of the brake cylinder, wherein the second rod is connected to the second locking nut via second threads so that the second locking nut will rotate if the second rod moves axially through the second locking nut; a second locking sleeve moveable between a locked position, where the locking sleeve engages the second locking nut and prevents from the second nut from rotating, and a released position, where the second locking sleeve is disengages from the second locking nut and the second locking nut is free to rotate; a second spring providing a second force biasing the second locking nut into the locked position; and a second brake pipe pressure chamber in communication with the second port and positioned to bias the second locking sleeve into the released position if the brake pipe pressure in the second chamber exceeds the second force of the second spring. 9. The parking brake of claim 8 , wherein the first and second housings are positioned on opposing sides of a piston rod of the brake cylinder. 10. The parking brake of claim 9 , wherein the first and second ports are connected to a single brake pipe pressure inlet. 11. The parking brake of claim 10 , further comprising a second manual release interconnected to the second locking sleeve and rotatable from a first position, where the second locking sleeve is free to engage the second locking nut, and a second position where the second locking sleeve is moved by the second manual release into the released position. 12. The parking brake of claim 11 , wherein the first and second manual releases are interconnected to each other. 13. The parking brake of claim 4 , wherein the manual release includes a lever interconnected to a remotely positioned manual release handle by a chain so that movement of the manual release handle will cause the lever to move the manual release to rotate from the first position to the second position, thereby moving the locking sleeve into the released position.
