Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A patient support apparatus includes a base, a patient support, and a lift mechanism wherein the lift mechanism is coupled to the patient support by at least one upper pivot connection. The upper pivot connection includes an elongated slot and a pin captured in the elongated slot to form a sliding pivot axis, with the sliding pivot axis traveling along the elongated slot when the lift mechanism raises or lowers the patient support.

We claim: 1. A patient support apparatus comprising: a base; a deck support frame; and a lift mechanism to raise or lower said deck support frame relative to said base, said lift mechanism having a foot end lift assembly and a head end lift assembly, each of said foot end lift assembly and said head end lift assembly having a pair of four bar linkages, each of the four bar linkages being formed from four bar links, one of the four bar links of each of said four bar linkages forming a first lift arm and another of the four bar links of each of said four bar linkages forming a second lift arm, each of said first lift arms individually pivotally coupled to said deck support frame by a first upper pivot connection, each of said second lift arms pivotally coupled to a respective first lift arm at an upper end thereof and pivotally coupled to said base at a lower end thereof by a second lower pivot connection, said first lift arms of said foot end lift assembly being independent from said first lift arms of said head end lift assembly, each of said first upper pivot connections including an elongated slot defining first and second slot ends and a pin captured in said elongated slot to form a sliding pivot axis between said first and second slot ends wherein said first and second slot ends define stops for said pin, wherein said sliding pivot axes travel along said elongated slots when said lift mechanism raises or lowers or tilts said deck support frame relative to said base. 2. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein each of said elongated slots comprises a linear slot. 3. The patient support apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said linear slot facilitates longitudinal displacement of said pin when a first end of said deck support frame is raised or lowered relative to a second end of said deck support frame. 4. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said elongated slots are positioned at said deck support frame. 5. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein each of said second lift arms comprises first and second arm members. 6. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a display mounted on said patient support apparatus, said display to display information about said patient support apparatus. 7. The patient support apparatus according to claim 6 , further comprising a control interface device and a controller in communication with said control interface device and said display, said controller to generate an icon associated with a function of said patient support apparatus and to display said icon at said display. 8. The patient support apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein said display is positioned on a footboard, said footboard being removably mounted to said deck support frame. 9. The patient support apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein said controller is to generate a dynamic icon associated with said function and to change said dynamic icon in response to input at said control interface device, thereby providing visual feedback to a user operating said control interface device. 10. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a side rail movably mounted to said patient support apparatus, and said side rail being movable toward or away from said deck support frame during rotational movement of said side rail. 11. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a side rail movably mounted to said patient support apparatus, said side rail movable between a raised position and a lowered position through rotational movement. 12. The patient support apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein said side rail comprises a locking mechanism to secure said side rail in said raised position. 13. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said deck support frame moves between an uppermost raised position and a lowermost lowered position, said uppermost raised position being substantially vertically aligned with said lowermost lowered position of said deck support frame. 14. The patient support apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said base defines a longitudinal axis, said deck support frame being located between two vertical generally parallel planes spaced along said longitudinal axis, and said lift mechanism being configured to generally maintain said deck support frame between said two vertical planes when said deck support frame moves between said uppermost raised position and said lowermost lowered position. 15. The patient support apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said lift mechanism is configured to raise or lower said deck support frame relative to said base with a longitudinal deviation relative to said longitudinal axis of less than about 1 inch. 16. The patient support apparatus according to claim 15 , wherein said longitudinal deviation is less than about ½ inch. 17. A patient support apparatus comprising: a base; a deck support frame having a foot end, a head end, a longitudinal axis extending between said foot end and said head end, and a lateral axis extending orthogonal to said longitudinal axis; a lift mechanism to raise or lower said deck support frame relative to said base; and a side rail movably pivotally mounted to said patient support apparatus about pivot axes perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the deck, said side rail movable in a longitudinal direction about said pivot axes generally parallel to said longitudinal axis of said deck support frame when said side rail moves between a raised position and a lowered position, and said side rail having a side rail body with a vertical orientation, and said side rail having a vertical extent and being configured to move in a lateral direction parallel to said lateral axis of said deck support frame toward or away from said deck support frame while maintaining its vertical orientation and extent when said side rail moves between said raised position and said lowered position. 18. The patient support apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein said side rail comprises a locking mechanism to secure said side rail in said raised position. 19. The patient support apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein said lift mechanism is coupled to said deck support frame by at least one upper pivot connection, said upper pivot connection including an elongated slot and a pin captured in said elongated slot to form a sliding pivot axis, and said sliding pivot axis traveling along said elongated slot when said lift mechanism raises or lowers said deck support frame. 20. The patient support apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein said lift mechanism is coupled to said deck support frame by a first pair of upper pivot connections and a second pair of upper pivot connections, each pivot connection of said first pair of upper pivot connections including an elongated slot and a pin captured in said elongated slot to form a sliding pivot axis, and said sliding pivot axes traveling along said elongated slots when said lift mechanism raises or lowers said deck support frame. 21. The patient support apparatus according to claim 20 , wherein said elongated slot facilitates longitudinal displacement of said pin when a first end of said deck support frame is raised or lowered relative to a second end of said deck support frame. 22. The patient support apparatus according to claim 20 , wherein said lift mechanism includes a first pair of lift arms and a second pair of lif
