Official abstract text for this publication.
A surgical stapling apparatus (stapler) is provided. The stapler includes a housing, elongated member, and a reload. A cartridge is configured to selectively couple to a first jaw member of the reload and includes one or more resilient members thereon. An anvil operably supported on a second jaw member of the reload is configured to compress one or more fasteners ejected from the cartridge. The anvil includes one or more locking members thereon. A knife is configured to translate through the cartridge and anvil when the first and second jaw members are in a closed configuration. Engagement between the knife and the resilient member(s) causes the resilient member(s) to move from an initial configuration that allows the knife to travel distally past the locking member(s) to a final configuration that allows the locking member(s) to engage the knife.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a first jaw member having a locking assembly and defining a channel extending along a longitudinal axis of the first jaw member and through a surface of the first jaw member: a cartridge configured to selectively couple to the first jaw member, the cartridge having fasteners and an actuator having a proximally extending finger; a second jaw member having an anvil with staple forming depressions; a drive member movable through the channel from a retracted position to an advanced position to drive the fasteners toward the anvil, the drive member pushing a sled so that the sled interacts with a pusher; the actuator being coupled to the sled and biased against the pusher, the finger of the actuator aligning with the locking assembly when the cartridge couples to first jaw member; and the locking assembly including a locking lever biased toward the channel of the first jaw member, the finger of the actuator contacting the locking lever when the cartridge is coupled to the first jaw, rotating the locking lever to a position away from the channel, the locking lever moving to a position blocking the channel when the drive member is moved to the advanced position; and the first jaw member defines a recess and includes a sidewall, the locking lever rotating to the position away from the channel until a portion of the locking lever contacts the sidewall of the first jaw member. 2. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the locking lever has a boss disposed for contact with the finger. 3. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the drive member moves the sled distally, the sled and the pusher being arranged so that the pusher is raised by the sled. 4. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the actuator is positioned between the wedge members of the sled. 5. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a blocking member on the cartridge to limit distal movement of the actuator. 6. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the locking assembly has a spring clip with two resilient legs. 7. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the locking lever has an angled leading edge. 8. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the locking lever has a transverse edge that extends across the channel when the locking lever is in the position blocking the channel. 9. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the lever is positioned across the channel of the first jaw member. 10. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a first jaw member having a locking assembly and defining a knife channel; a cartridge selectively coupled to the first jaw member, the cartridge including a sled and an actuator, the actuator coupled to the sled and having a proximally extending finger; a drive member movable through the knife channel from a retracted position to an advanced position to advance the sled; and the locking assembly including a locking lever having a blocking position in which the locking lever is positioned across the knife channel of the first jaw member and a non-blocking position in which the finger is positioned away from the knife channel, the finger of the actuator contacting the locking lever when the cartridge is coupled to the first jaw to rotate the locking lever from the blocking position to the non-blocking position, the locking lever moving to the blocking position when the drive member is moved towards the advanced position. 11. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the channel is defined along a longitudinal axis of the first jaw member and extends through a surface of the first jaw member. 12. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the first jaw member defines a recess and includes a sidewall, a portion of the locking lever contacting the sidewall of the first jaw member in the non-blocking position. 13. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a first jaw member having a locking assembly, the locking assembly including a locking lever; a cartridge selectively coupled to the first jaw member, the cartridge including a sled, an actuator, and a plurality of fasteners, the actuator coupled to the sled and including a proximally extending finger, the sled distally translatable through the cartridge to eject the plurality of fasteners from the cartridge; and a drive member translatable within the first jaw member between a retracted position to an advanced position, wherein the finger of the actuator engages the locking lever when the cartridge is coupled to the first jaw to rotate the locking lever from the blocking position in which the locking lever prevents advancement of the drive member from the retracted position to a non-blocking position in which the locking lever permits advancement of the drive member, and wherein the finger disengages the locking lever as the sled is translated distally such that biasing of the locking lever urges the locking lever to the blocking position. 14. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein advancement of the drive member towards the advanced position affects distal translation of the sled.
