Information is presented to a user by accessing a library of electronic publications that includes a first publication, generating a representation of the first publication in an electronic bookshelf, determining a state for the first publication and modifying the representation of the first publication to reflect the state of the first publication.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of presenting information, the method comprising: accessing, by an electronic device, a library of electronic publications; presenting, on a graphical user interface (GUI) shown on a display coupled to the electronic device, a bookshelf view that shows a visual representation of an electronic bookshelf that includes visual representations of the electronic publications included in the library; providing, on the GUI in the bookshelf view in conjunction with showing the electronic bookshelf, a control option to switch between the bookshelf view and a bookstore view; receiving an instruction to switch from the bookshelf view to the bookstore view; in response to receiving the instruction to switch from the bookshelf view to the bookstore view: establishing a network connection between the electronic device and a remote computer system associated with an online bookstore, and transitioning the GUI from the bookshelf view to the bookstore view, wherein the bookstore view provides a representation of the online bookstore; presenting, on the GUI in the bookstore view, representations of electronic publications that are available for preview or purchase in the online bookstore; receiving an instruction to purchase an electronic publication from the online bookstore; and in response to receiving the instruction to purchase the electronic publication: downloading, from the remote computer system to the electronic device over the network connection, a copy of the purchased electronic publication, transitioning the GUI from the bookstore view to the bookshelf view in conjunction with downloading the copy of the purchased electronic publication, wherein transitioning the GUI from the bookstore view to the bookshelf view comprises presenting a first animation displaying the copy of the purchased electronic publication being transferred from the online bookstore to the electronic bookshelf concurrently with a second animation displaying transition of the GUI from the bookstore view to the bookshelf view, and displaying the representation of the purchased electronic publication in the electronic bookshelf. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the library of electronic publications includes a first publication, the method further comprising: determining that the first publication is a new addition to the library or has been accessed within a specified time period; and based on the determining, presenting the first publication in the electronic bookshelf using a front cover view. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the library of electronic publications includes a first publication, the method further comprising: determining that the first publication has not been accessed within a first time period; and based on determining that the first publication has not been accessed within the first time period, presenting a binding view of the first publication in the electronic bookshelf. 4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: modifying the representation of the first publication to present a layer of dust over the first publication. 5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: receiving an instruction to access the first publication; and in response to receiving the instruction to access the first publication, providing an animation of a dust cloud. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the library of electronic publications includes a first publication, the method further comprising: presenting the first publication in the electronic bookshelf with a magazine icon when the first publication is determined to be a magazine, or presenting the first publication in the electronic bookshelf with a newspaper icon when the first publication is determined to be a newspaper. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the library of electronic publications includes a first publication, the method further comprising: determining a state for the first publication; and generating a representation of the first publication to reflect the state of the first publication, wherein the representation of the first publication includes a label indicating the state of the first publication. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the label indicates one of: the first publication has not yet been accessed, the first publication is a new purchase, or the first publication is being downloaded. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein showing the electronic bookshelf including the representations of the electronic publications comprises: determining a geographic location of the electronic device; determining that a first electronic publication that is present in the electronic bookshelf includes content corresponding to the geographic location; and displaying the first electronic publication in the electronic bookshelf with an indication that the first electronic publication is relevant to the geographic location of the electronic device. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein presenting the first electronic publication in the electronic bookshelf with an indication that the first electronic publication is relevant to the geographic location includes one of presenting a ribbon associated with the representation of the first electronic publication to indicate a relevance of the first electronic publication to the geographic location, or positioning the representation of the first electronic publication in a specified portion of the electronic bookshelf that is associated with the geographic location. 11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: presenting, on the GUI in the bookstore view, representations of electronic publications that are available for preview or purchase in the online bookstore; receiving an instruction to preview a first electronic publication available in the online bookstore; and in response to receiving the instruction to preview the first electronic publication, downloading, from the remote computer system to the electronic device over the network connection, a portion of the first electronic publication, wherein the electronic device is configured to enable a user to browse the downloaded portion of the first electronic publication when the electronic device is not connected to the remote computer system associated with the online bookstore. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein showing the representations of the electronic publications in the electronic bookshelf in the bookshelf view comprises: automatically updating, by the electronic device, display of the electronic bookshelf to reflect one or more of availability of new content or alteration in status information associated with an electronic publication included in the library of electronic publications, wherein the availability of new content includes one of a new electronic publication that is purchased or updated versions of electronic publications previously purchased, and wherein alteration in status information associated with an electronic publication includes alteration in appearance of the electronic publication from a first appearance indicating that electronic publication is partially downloaded in the electronic device to a second appearance indicating that the electronic publication is fully downloaded in the electronic device. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein showing the representations of the electronic publications in the electronic bookshelf in the bookshelf view comprises: displaying, in the electronic bookshelf, representations of the electronic publications arranged based on one or more of publication types, newness, purchase date, time of access, or frequency of access. 14.
