Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A media agent is configured to perform substantially autonomously to initiate, continue, and manage information management operations such as a backup job of a certain client's primary data, manage the operations, and generate and store resultant system-level metadata from the operations, etc. The media agent is configured to do this even when out of communication with the storage manager that manages the information management system. When communications are restored, the media agent reports the relevant metadata to the storage manager such that the storage manager may seamlessly integrate the information into its management information infrastructure.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for protecting data while a storage manager is out of communication with other components in the system, the system comprising: a first computing device for hosting a storage manager; a secondary storage device; a secondary storage computing device in communication with (i) the secondary storage device and (ii) a client computing device, the secondary storage computing device comprising: executable logic, and management parameters received from the storage manager in anticipation of the secondary storage computing device being out of communication with the storage manager; wherein, based at least in part on the executable logic and one or more of the management parameters, the secondary storage computing device is configured to autonomously initiate and manage an information management job relative to primary data accessible to the client computing device, while out of communication with the storage manager and without being directed by the storage manager or by any other storage manager, and while the client computing device is also out of communication with the storage manager, and wherein the information management job comprises a secondary copy operation for a portion of the primary data accessible to the client computing device; and wherein, based at least in part on the executable logic, the secondary storage computing device is further configured to transmit to the storage manager after communications between the secondary storage computing device and the storage manager resume, metadata that is based on the information management job. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein if the secondary copy operation is successful, the secondary storage computing device, based on the executable logic, is further configured to (a) generate a secondary copy of the portion of the primary data accessible to the client computing device, (b) store the secondary copy to the secondary storage device, and (c) generate the metadata to be transmitted to the storage manager indicating that the secondary copy was generated; and if the secondary copy operation fails in whole or in part, the storage computing device, based on the executable logic, is further configured to generate the metadata to be transmitted to the storage manager indicating that the secondary copy operating failed in while or in part. 3. The system of claim 1 wherein the metadata that is based on the information management job is configured for integration into a management database associated with the storage manager. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the metadata that is based on the information management job identifies the client computing device and the portion of the primary data managed under the information management job. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein to initiate and manage the information management job while out of communication with the storage manager, the secondary storage computing device is further configured to: instruct the client computing device to transmit the portion of the primary data to the secondary storage computing device, generate at least one secondary copy based on the portion of primary data, store the at least one secondary copy to the secondary storage device, and generate the metadata. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein to initiate and manage the information management job while out of communication with the storage manager, the secondary storage computing device is further configured to: instruct the client computing device to transmit the portion of primary data to the secondary storage computing device, generate at least one secondary copy based on the portion of the primary data, store the at least one secondary copy to the secondary storage device, and generate the metadata, wherein the metadata identifies at least the client computing device and the portion of the primary data managed under the information management job. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the management parameters received from the storage manager comprise a storage policy that defines criteria for the secondary copy operation in reference to a subclient comprising the portion of the primary data accessible to the client computing device. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the management parameters received from the storage manager comprise at least one storage policy associated with at least some of the data accessible to the client computing device. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the management parameters received from the storage manager comprise at least one storage policy, and wherein the information management job is based on the storage policy. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the metadata transmitted to the storage manager comprises an association between the information management job and the secondary storage computing device. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the metadata transmitted to the storage manager comprises an association between the information management job and a media agent that comprises the executable logic that executes on the secondary storage computing device. 12. An information management system comprising: a first computing device for hosting a storage manager for managing the information management system; a secondary storage device; a secondary storage computing device in communication with (i) the secondary storage device and (ii) a client computing device, the secondary storage computing device comprising: executable logic, and management parameters received from the storage manager in anticipation of the secondary storage computing device being out of communication with the storage manager; wherein, based at least in part on the executable logic and one or more of the management parameters, the secondary storage computing device is configured to initiate and manage without being directed by the storage manager or by any other storage manager, while one or both of the secondary storage computing device and the client computing device are out of communication with the storage manager, an information management job to make one or more secondary copies, to be stored to the secondary storage device, of at least a portion of primary data that is accessible to the client computing device; wherein, based at least in part on the executable logic, the secondary storage computing device is further configured to transmit to the storage manager after communications thereto resume metadata that is based on the information management job. 13. The information management system of claim 12 , wherein the storage manager is configured to integrate the metadata received from the secondary storage computing device into a management database that comprises information about secondary copies in the information management system. 14. The information management system of claim 12 , wherein the information management job is a secondary copy operation for the portion of primary data generated by the client computing device if the information management job is successful, the secondary storage computing device, based on the executable logic, is further configured to (a) store the one or more secondary copies to the secondary storage device, (b) for each of the one or more secondary copies, keep track of a respective storage location therefor in the secondary storage device in an index in the secondary storage computing device, and (c) generate the metadata to be transmitted to the storage manager indicating that the one or more secondary copies were made; and if the information management job fails in whole or in part, the secondary storage computing device, based on the executable logi
