The invention claimed is: 1. A power transmission apparatus including a transmission, a case that accommodates the transmission, a counter drive gear to which power from the transmission is transmitted, a counter driven gear that meshes with the counter drive gear, and a drive pinion gear that is disposed and spaced apart in an axial direction from the counter driven gear and that rotates together with the counter driven gear, the power transmission apparatus comprising: a brake including a brake drum fixed to the case, a brake hub disposed inside of the brake drum and coupled to any rotational element of the transmission, a first friction engagement plate fitted to the brake hub, a second friction engagement plate fitted to the brake drum, a piston that is disposed inside of the brake drum and that presses and engages the first and second friction engagement plates by friction, and an engagement oil chamber defined inside of the brake drum and the piston and to which hydraulic oil is supplied, wherein the brake drum is fixed to the case so that a drum portion of the brake drum is disposed between the counter driven gear and the drive pinion gear in the axial direction, wherein the drum portion has an inner radial surface in which the second friction engagement plate is fitted and an outer radial surface opposite the inner radial surface, and wherein an axial end of the outer radial surface is adjacent to a tooth tip of the drive pinion gear and the axial end of the outer radial surface is disposed closer to an axis center of the counter driven gear and the drive pinion gear than an outer radial surface of the tooth tip. 2. The power transmission apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a supporting member that is integrally molded with the drum portion functioning as the brake drum, supports the counter drive gear so as to be rotatable, and that is fixed to the case such that the drum portion is disposed closer to the axis center between the counter driven gear and the drive pinion gear, wherein the supporting member defines the engagement oil chamber inside of the drum portion in cooperation with the piston. 3. The power transmission apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the supporting member includes a boss portion that supports the counter drive gear so as to be rotatable, and an annular wall portion integrally molded with the boss portion and the drum portion so as to extend between the boss portion and the drum portion, and the annular wall portion has a recessed portion formed to surround a part of the counter driven gear, and defines an oil chamber, to which hydraulic oil is supplied, inside of the recessed portion in cooperation with the drum portion and the piston. 4. The power transmission apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the brake further includes a return spring that is disposed inside of the drum portion and that biases the piston, and a spring supporting member that is disposed inside of the drum portion and that supports the return spring; the spring supporting member includes an annular supporting portion that supports one end of the return spring, and a plurality of extended portions extending from the annular supporting portion at intervals in a circumferential direction and each including an end that is extended inward from the plurality of extended portions; a plurality of contacting portions each contacting with the end of the spring supporting member are formed on an inner surface of the annular wall portion; and the spring supporting member is prevented from falling out from the annular wall portion by a snap ring attached to the annular wall portion such that the snap ring supports the end contacting with the corresponding contacting portion. 5. The power transmission apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the engagement oil chamber is disposed on the counter drive gear side in the axial direction with respect to the first and second friction engagement plates. 6. The power transmission apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the inner radial surface of the drum portion is disposed closer to the axis center of the counter driven gear and the drive pinion gear than the outer radial surface of the tooth tip of the drive pinion gear.
