Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Shoe uppers having smooth seams and methods for producing them are disclosed. In one embodiment the upper uses thermoplastic seam tape which forms bonds between contiguous upper sections after being subjected to heat and/or pressure. In another embodiment, different parts of the shoe can be joined using hidden seams. Close seams can also be covered with a transfer material adapted to give the interior and/or exterior of the upper a smooth surface. In yet another embodiment, a method is disclosed which allows three-dimensional upper sections to be bonded on a last using thermoplastic seam tape.

What is claimed is: 1. An upper for an article of footwear comprising: a first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section having an interior side and an exterior side, wherein the interior side is an innermost side of the upper and the exterior side is an outermost side of the upper; a second pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section rearwardly adjacent the first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section having an interior side and an exterior side, wherein the interior side is an innermost side of the upper and the exterior side is an outermost side of the upper, wherein the first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section and the second pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section form a three-dimensional seam and are joined at least partially to one another along the seam using a three-dimensional male last surface and a three-dimensional female last surface having an interior shape substantially the same as the male last surface; an inner thermoplastic seam tape disposed on and substantially covering the seam on the innermost side of the upper; and an outer thermoplastic seam tape disposed on and substantially covering the seam on the outermost side of the upper, wherein the seam comprises a first end disposed on a lateral side of the upper and a second end disposed on the lateral side of the upper forward of the first end, wherein the seam extends from a top edge of the upper to a bottom edge of the upper, wherein the seam is curved between the first end and the second end and a length of the seam is greater than a shortest distance along a surface of the upper between the first end and the second end, and wherein the inner thermoplastic seam tape and the outer thermoplastic seam tape are curved along the length of the seam. 2. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the seam is a stitched seam. 3. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the seam is a stitchless seam. 4. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section and the second pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section are adapted to be coupled to a sole. 5. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section defines at least a portion of a toe area of the upper, and wherein the second pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section defines a midfoot area of the upper. 6. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the inner thermoplastic seam tape is heat sealed on the seam. 7. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section is thicker than the second pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section. 8. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the seam is at a juncture of a lateral vamp section and a lateral heel section. 9. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the seam extends from a lower lateral edge of the upper to an upper lateral edge of the upper in a lateral heel section. 10. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic tape comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polyurethane, polyamide, polyester, nylon, polyolefin, vinyl, polypropylene, thermoplastic urethane, tricot, acrylic, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). 11. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the inner thermoplastic seam tape and the outer thermoplastic seam tape are different. 12. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the inner thermoplastic seam tape and the outer thermoplastic seam tape are cut to a geometry to match the seam. 13. The upper according to claim 1 , wherein the first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section and the second pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section are joined at least partially to one another by at least one seam using a three-dimensional male last surface and a three-dimensional female last surface having an interior shape substantially the same as the male last surface and applying heat through at least one of the male last surface and the female last surface. 14. An upper for an article of footwear comprising: a first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section having an interior side and an exterior side, wherein the interior side is an innermost side of the upper and the exterior side is an outermost side of the upper; a second pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section rearwardly adjacent the first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section having an interior side and an exterior side, wherein the interior side is an innermost side of the upper and the exterior side is an outermost side of the upper; wherein the first pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section and the second pre-shaped, molded three-dimensional upper section form a three-dimensional medial seam and a three-dimensional lateral seam and are joined at least partially to one another along the medial seam and the lateral seam using a three-dimensional male last surface and a three-dimensional female last surface having an interior shape substantially the same as the male last surface; an inner medial thermoplastic seam tape having a geometry substantially matching the medial seam, the inner medial thermoplastic seam tape disposed on and substantially covering the medial seam on the innermost side of the upper; an inner lateral thermoplastic seam tape having a geometry substantially matching the lateral seam, the inner lateral thermoplastic seam tape disposed on and substantially covering the lateral seam on the innermost side of the upper; an outer medial thermoplastic seam tape having a geometry substantially matching the medial seam, the outer medial thermoplastic seam tape disposed on and substantially covering the medial seam on the outermost side of the upper; and an outer lateral thermoplastic seam tape having a geometry substantially matching the lateral seam, the outer lateral thermoplastic seam tape disposed on and substantially covering the lateral seam on the outermost side of the upper, wherein the medial seam comprises a first medial end disposed on a medial side of the upper and a second medial end disposed on the medial side of the upper forward of the first medial end, wherein the medial seam extends from a top medial edge of the upper to a bottom medial edge of the upper, wherein the medial seam is curved between the first medial end and the second medial end and a length of the medial seam is greater than a shortest distance along a surface of the upper between the first medial end and the second medial end, wherein the lateral seam comprises a first lateral end disposed on a lateral side of the upper and a second lateral end disposed on the lateral side of the upper forward of the first lateral end, wherein the lateral seam extends from a top lateral edge of the upper to a bottom lateral edge of the upper, wherein the lateral seam is curved between the first lateral end and the second lateral end and a length of the lateral seam is greater than a shortest distance along a surface of the upper between the first lateral end and the second lateral end, wherein the inner medial thermoplastic seam tape and the outer medial thermoplastic seam tape are curved along the length of the medial seam, and wherein the inner lateral thermoplastic seam tape and the outer lateral thermoplastic seam tape are curved along the length of the lateral seam. 15.
