Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of one aspect may include receiving an encapsulated image acquisition device having an internal memory. The internal memory may store images acquired by the encapsulated image acquisition device. The images may be transferred from the internal memory to an external memory that is external to the encapsulated image acquisition device. An image analysis station may be selected from among a plurality of image analysis stations to analyze the images. The images may be analyzed with the selected image analysis station. Other methods, systems, and kits are also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A kit comprising: a capsule endoscope having an internal memory, the internal memory of the capsule endoscope capable of storing a sequence of images acquired by the capsule endoscope, wherein the kit is received by a patient without a visit to a physician's office; a pre-addressed return device, the pre-addressed return device pre-addressed with an address of an analysis facility that is to analyze images obtained by the capsule endoscope; and instructions to return the capsule endoscope after use to the analysis facility in the pre-addressed return device; wherein the internal memory is a nonvolatile memory, and the images from the internal memory are transferred to an external memory for a first time after the analysis facility receives the capsule endoscope that was returned; and wherein the kit is sealed within a container including a conductive lining surrounding the capsule endoscope at least in part to protect circuitry in the capsule endoscope from static electricity, wherein the container includes a pouch with the conductive lining including a metal foil so that the capsule endoscope is at least in part surrounded by the metal foil, and wherein the pouch also includes a padding disposed on inner walls of the pouch. 2. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the pre-addressed return device has a pre-paid postage. 3. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the address comprises an address of a special-purpose analysis facility that has technicians that are trained to analyze images for disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. 4. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the address comprises an address of an analysis facility that is not one of a hospital, a patient treating clinic, or a patient treating office of a physician. 5. The kit of claim 1 , included within a delivered mailing device having at least one of a postmark and a cancellation of postage. 6. The kit of claim 1 , further comprising patient identification information sufficient to identify a patient who is to use the capsule endoscope stored in the capsule endoscope. 7. The kit of claim 1 , further comprising analysis level specifying information stored in the capsule endoscope, the analysis level specifying information specifying a level of analysis that the analysis facility is to use to analyze the images. 8. The kit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one composition selected from a laxative and a bowel irrigation composition. 9. An image acquisition device kit comprising: a capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device having an internal memory, the internal memory of the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device capable of storing a sequence of images acquired by the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device, wherein the image acquisition device kit is received by a patient without a visit to a physician's office; a pre-addressed return device, the pre-addressed return device pre-addressed with an address of an analysis facility that is to analyze images obtained by the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device, wherein the analysis facility is to analyze the images obtained by the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device in order to detect whether or not features of interest are in the images; instructions to return the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device after use to the analysis facility in the pre-addressed return device; wherein the internal memory is a nonvolatile memory, and the images from the internal memory are transferred to an external memory for a first time after the analysis facility receives the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device that was returned; and wherein the image acquisition device kit includes a conductive lining surrounding the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device at least in part to protect circuitry in the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device from static electricity, wherein the image acquisition device kit includes a pouch with the conductive lining including a metal foil so that the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device is at least in part surrounded by the metal foil, and wherein the pouch also includes a padding disposed on inner walls of the pouch. 10. The image acquisition device kit of claim 9 , wherein the address comprises an address of an analysis facility that is to analyze the images in order to detect whether or not abnormalities are in the images. 11. The image acquisition device kit of claim 9 , wherein the address comprises an address of a special-purpose analysis facility specializes in analyzing images for particular types of features of interest. 12. The image acquisition device kit of claim 9 , wherein the instructions comprise instructions to introduce the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device into one end of a conduit so that the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device can acquire images of an inner surface of the conduit and instructions to recover the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device from another end of the conduit. 13. The image acquisition device kit of claim 9 , included within a sealed delivered mailing device having at least one of a postmark and a cancellation of postage. 14. The image acquisition device kit of claim 13 , wherein the delivered mailing device comprises an address of a person who is to use the encapsulated image acquisition device. 15. The image acquisition device kit of claim 9 , further comprising person identification information sufficient to identify a person who is to use the capsular and encapsulated image acquisition device stored in the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device. 16. The image acquisition device kit of claim 9 , further comprising analysis level specifying information stored in the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device, the analysis level specifying information specifying a level of analysis that the analysis facility is to use to analyze the images. 17. The image acquisition device kit of claim 9 , wherein the internal memory of the capsular and hermetically sealed image acquisition device comprises at least 64 gigabytes of storage. 18. The image acquisition device kit of claim 9 , wherein the kit is sealed within a container. 19. A method of analyzing images comprising: receiving an encapsulated image acquisition device having an internal memory, the internal memory of the encapsulated image acquisition device storing images acquired by the encapsulated image acquisition device, wherein the image acquisition device is received by a patient without a visit to a physician's office; transferring the images from the internal memory of the encapsulated image acquisition device to an external memory that is external to the encapsulated image acquisition device, wherein the internal memory is coupled to a data output port to output transfer the images, and wherein the data output port is coupled to the external memory; selecting an image analysis station from among a plurality of image analysis stations to analyze the images; and analyzing the images with the selected image analysis station, the selected image analysis station having a processor and an image display device, the processor operable to cause the images to be displayed on the image display device. 20.
