A system and method for enabling set up of a controlling device capable of controlling a plurality of appliances provides an interactive instruction set and associated programming which is downloadable to a controllable appliance having an associated display, such as an Internet enabled television. The programming is accessible by the controllable appliance and is configured to appropriately display interactive instructions from the interactive instruction set to a user during a user initiated set up procedure for setting up the controlling device to communicate commands to another controllable device (e.g., a DVD, VCR, DVR, etc).

What is claimed is: 1. A method for providing interactive instructions to a user to set up a controlling device used to command a controllable appliance, the method comprising: provisioning to a first appliance, wherein the first appliance has an associated display, programming for displaying on the display instructions for setting up the controlling device to command operations of a corresponding plurality of controllable appliances; receiving at the first appliance from the controlling device a series of communications, wherein the series of communications function to indicate to the programming a selection of a device type and a brand of at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances for which the controlling device is desired to be setup to command; and in response to the programming determining that the series of communications has resulted in a completion of the selection of the device type and the brand of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances for which the controlling device is desired to be setup to command, causing the programming to display in the display at least one suggested setup sequence comprised of a plurality of digit keys which will need to be activated on the controlling device to thereby setup the controlling device to command operations of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of appliances. 2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the programming is provisioned to the first appliance by being pre-installed on the first appliance at a time of manufacture. 3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the programming is provisioned to the first appliance by being downloaded to the first appliance from a second appliance. 4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the programming is provisioned to the first appliance by being downloaded to the first appliance via the Internet. 5. The method as recited in claim 1 , comprising downloading to the first appliance via the Internet data usable by the programming to display instructions for setting up the controlling device to command operations of one or more of the plurality of controllable appliances. 6. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the programming functions to display alphanumeric indicators which are selectable via the series of communications received by the first appliance from the controlling device to thereby indicate to the programming the device type and the brand of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances. 7. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the programming functions to auto-complete the brand of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances in response to a partial completion of the the brand via the communications. 8. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the programming functions to display a plurality of menus comprising entries which are selectable via the series of communications received by the first appliance from the controlling device to thereby indicate to the programming the device type and the brand of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances and wherein the series of communications comprises a series of commands that are transmitted by the controlling device in response to activations of navigation keys of the controlling device. 9. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the programming causes a display in the display of the first appliance an indication of any of the plurality of appliances the controlling device has already been setup to control via a previously provided sequence comprised of a plurality of digit keys to be activated on the controlling device. 10. A system, comprising: a controlling device; and a first appliance in communication with the controlling device, the first appliance having an associated display and programming for displaying on the display instructions for setting up the controlling device to command operations of a corresponding plurality of controllable appliances; wherein the first appliance receives from the controlling device a series of communications to indicate to the programming a selection of a device type and a brand of at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances for which the controlling device is desired to be setup to command and wherein, in response to the programming determining that the series of communications has resulted in a completion of the selection of the device type and the brand of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances for which the controlling device is desired to be setup to command, the programming causes to be displayed in the display at least one suggested setup sequence comprised of a plurality of digit keys which will need to be activated on the controlling device to thereby setup the controlling device to command operations of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of appliances. 11. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the programming is provisioned to the first appliance by being pre-installed on the first appliance at a time of manufacture. 12. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the programming is provisioned to the first appliance by being downloaded to the first appliance from a second appliance. 13. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the programming is provisioned to the first appliance by being downloaded to the first appliance via the Internet. 14. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein data usable by the programming to display instructions for setting up the controlling device to command operations of one or more of the plurality of controllable appliances is downloaded to the first appliance via the Internet. 15. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the programming functions to display alphanumeric indicators which are selectable via the series of communications received by the first appliance from the controlling device to thereby indicate to the programming the device type and the brand of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances. 16. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the programming functions to auto-complete the brand of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances in response to a partial completion of the brand via the communications. 17. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the programming functions to display a plurality of menus comprising entries which are selectable via the series of communications received by the first appliance from the controlling device to thereby indicate to the programming the device type and the brand of the at least one controllable appliance of the plurality of controllable appliances and wherein the series of communications comprises a series of commands that are transmitted by the controlling device in response to activations of navigation keys of the controlling device. 18. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the programming causes a display in the display of the first appliance an indication of any of the plurality of appliances the controlling device has already been setup to control via a previously provided sequence comprised of a plurality of digit keys to be activated on the controlling device.
