A needle assembly 10 compromising an infusion needle 11 that includes a needle cannula 13 made of a superelastic material such as Nitinol. The needle cannula is cold-worked or heat annealed to produce a preformed bend 16 that can be straightened within passageway 21 of a coaxial outer cannula 12 for introduction into the body of a patient. Upon deployment from the outer cannula, the needle cannula substantially returns to the preformed configuration for the introduction or extraction of materials at areas lateral to the entry path of the needle assembly. The needle assembly can compromise a plurality of needle cannulae than can be variably arranged or configured for attaining a desired infusion pattern.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of infusing fluid into a tumor comprising: providing a housing having a distal opening, a plurality of side apertures formed in a side wall of the housing and a first plurality of needle cannula each having a passageway and a distal tip portion, a second plurality of needle cannula each having a passageway and a distal tip portion, and a third plurality of needle cannula each having a passageway and a distal tip portion, each of the needle cannula while in its unconstrained configuration having a least one preformed bend proximate to a distal tip and being constrainable to a second configuration, the side apertures are positioned along a wall of the housing proximal of the distal opening and include a first plurality of apertures aligned with a first longitudinal axis, a second plurality of apertures aligned with a second longitudinal axis, and a third plurality of apertures aligned with a third longitudinal axis, the third plurality of apertures longitudinally and radially spaced from the first and second plurality of apertures, the distal tip portions of the first plurality of needle cannula extending through the first plurality of apertures being longitudinally aligned and longitudinally spaced and the distal tip portions of the second plurality of needle cannula extending through the second plurality of apertures being longitudinally aligned and longitudinally spaced, and the distal tip portion of the third plurality of needle cannula being longitudinally aligned and longitudinally spaced, each of the third plurality of needle cannula being radially offset from each of the first and second plurality of needle cannula; providing an introducer cannula; positioning the housing in the introducer cannula so the introducer cannula covers the side apertures; moving one or both of the introducer cannula and housing so selective side apertures are selectively exposed or blocked, the introducer cannula preventing premature exit of the needle cannula; releasing the external constraining forces so the needle cannula radiate outwardly from the region of the housing spaced proximally from a distal tip of the housing and the needle cannula extend through a respective side aperture in the housing so said distal tip portion of each of said needle cannula substantially returns to the unconstrained configuration extending forwardly and radially outwardly from a respective preformed bend, a plurality of needle cannulas extending distally through the distal opening beyond a distal tip of the housing; and delivering fluid through the passageways of the needle cannulas so the fluid exits through the opening in the needle and infuses into the tissue to ablate the tissue to provide lateral fluid infusion. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third plurality of needle cannula are spaced proximally of the first and second plurality of needle cannula and extend through additional side apertures in the housing for lateral infusion of fluid when deployed from the constrained configuration to the unconstrained configuration. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the distal tips of the third plurality of needle cannula are spaced proximally of the distal tip of the housing. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distal tips of the second plurality of needle cannula are spaced proximally of the distal tip of the housing. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the needle cannula are composed of superelastic alloy. 6. A system for infusing fluid into a tumor, the system comprising: an introducer cannula and a housing having a distal opening, a plurality of side apertures formed in a side wall of the housing, and a first plurality of needle cannula each having a passageway and a distal tip portion, each of the needle cannula while in its unconstrained configuration having a least one preformed bend proximate to a distal tip and being constrainable to a second configuration, the side apertures are positioned along the wall of the housing and include a first plurality of apertures aligned with a first longitudinal axis and a second plurality of apertures aligned with a second longitudinal axis, the distal tip portions of the first plurality of needle cannula being longitudinally aligned and longitudinally spaced, the needle cannula having an constrained and unconstrained position, and in the unconstrained position, the needle cannula radiating outwardly from the region of the outer cannula spaced proximally from a distal tip of the housing and the needle cannula extend through a respective side aperture in the housing so said distal tip portion of each of said needle cannula substantially returns to the unconstrained configuration extending forwardly and radially outwardly from a respective preformed bend, a plurality of needle cannulas extending out a distal opening of the housing beyond a distal tip of the housing, the needle cannulas having passageways for delivering fluid therethrough so the fluid exits through the opening in the needle and infuses into tissue to ablate the tissue to provide lateral fluid infusion, wherein the housing is positionable in the introducer cannula so the introducer cannula covers the side apertures and the housing and introducer cannula are relatively movable to selectively block or expose the side apertures for passage of needle cannula, the introducer cannula preventing premature exit of the needle cannula and a second set of needle cannula spaced proximally of the first set of needle cannula and having passageways for fluid infusion and extending through additional side apertures in the housing for lateral infusion of fluid when deployed from a constrained configuration to an unconstrained configuration, the second plurality of needle cannula each having a distal tip portion, and the distal tip portions of the second plurality of needle cannula being longitudinally aligned and longitudinally spaced, each of the cannula of the second plurality of needle cannula longitudinally and radially offset from each of the cannula of the first plurality of needle cannula. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the needle cannula are composed of superelastic alloy. 8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein a handle of the apparatus is coaxial. 9. The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising a third plurality of needle cannula spaced proximally of the first plurality of needle cannula and having passageways for fluid infusion and extending through additional side apertures in the housing for lateral infusion of fluid when deployed from a constrained configuration to an unconstrained configuration, the third plurality of needle cannula each having a distal tip portion, and the distal tip portions of the third plurality of needle cannula being longitudinally aligned and longitudinally spaced. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the distal tips of the third plurality of needle cannula are spaced proximally of the distal tip of the housing.
