A respiratory mask assembly for delivering breathable gas to a patient includes a frame having a front surface and a rear surface, opposite the front surface, and adapted in use to face the patient. The frame defines an inner wall and an outer wall extending from the rear surface, the inner and outer walls being spaced to define a channel therebetween. A cushion is removably attachable to the frame such that the cushion and frame are repeatably engagable with and disengagable from one another. The cushion includes a side wall to be inserted into the channel of the frame, the side wall having a first interlocking surface that engages a second interlocking surface provided in the channel when the cushion and frame are engaged with one another. The first and second interlocking surfaces interlock with one another to removably attach the cushion to the frame.

What is claimed is: 1. A patient interface assembly for CPAP therapy of a patient, comprising: a frame with a central aperture; a cushion supported by the frame; an elbow adapted to connect to the frame at the central aperture; a front strap assembly including a pair of relatively flexible strap portions having a relatively soft fabric and foam material construction, each of said strap portions having a substantially Y-shape including a front strap extension positioned to extend laterally away from the frame and adapted to rest across the patient's cheek region in use, a top strap extension adapted to rest along the patient's temple region in use, and a rear strap extension configured to, in use, extend towards the rear of the patient's head under the patient's ear; a rear strap assembly having a pair of top straps and a pair of lower straps, each of the lower straps being connected to a respective one of the rear strap extensions of the front strap assembly via a lower connector; and a pair of stabilizing support members of a relatively rigid material compared to the strap material, each of said stabilizing support members having a substantially Y-shape with a front rigidizer extension dimensioned and configured to extend over the patient's cheek regions in use, a top rigidizer extension adapted to extend over the patient's temple region in use, and a rear rigidizer extension configured to, in use, extend towards the rear of the patient's head under the patient's ear, and each of the stabilizing support members having a degree of flexibility in one direction such that variations in patient physiology can be accommodated in use, each said top rigidizer extension having an integrally formed connector element in the form of a slot to receive a top strap end of a respective one of the top straps of the rear strap assembly, wherein the nasal mask assembly is not provided with a chin strap. 2. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein each said stabilizing support member is stiffer in another direction generally orthogonal to the one direction to resist vertical rotation of the cushion due to the weight of the frame and of components attached to the frame. 3. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of strap portions are made of laminated fabric and foam. 4. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the frame is not provided with a forehead support assembly. 5. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein, when fitted, each said front rigidizer extension is connected to the frame below the patient's eyes. 6. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the elbow includes an end portion adapted to be received within the central aperture of the frame. 7. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a gas washout vent with a plurality of holes to allow washout from a breathing cavity defined at least in part by the frame and cushion. 8. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the elbow is configured to be removed from the frame without accessing an interior portion of the frame. 9. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein engagement between the elbow and the frame makes an audible sound. 10. A patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the each said stabilizing support member is stiffer in another direction generally orthogonal to the one direction to resist vertical rotation of the frame due to the weight of the frame and of components attached to the frame; wherein the pair of strap portions are made of laminated fabric and foam; wherein the frame is not provided with a forehead support assembly; wherein, when fitted, each said front rigidizer extension is structured to be positioned below the patient's eyes in use; and wherein the elbow includes an end portion adapted to engage the central aperture of the frame. 11. A combination, comprising: the patient interface assembly according to claim 1 ; and a plurality of cushions of different sizes. 12. A patient interface assembly for CPAP therapy of a patient, comprising: a frame; a cushion supported by the frame; an elbow detachably connected to the frame; and a cushion support structure including: a strap assembly including at a pair of flexible straps each having a relatively soft fabric and foam material construction, and a pair of substantially Y-shaped stabilizing support members each made of a relatively rigid material compared to the flexible strap and having a degree of flexibility in a first direction such that variations in patient physiology can be accommodated in use, wherein the patient interface assembly is not provided with a chin strap, and wherein the patient interface assembly is not provided with a forehead support. 13. A combination, comprising: the patient interface assembly according to claim 12 ; and a plurality of cushions having different sizes. 14. A patient interface assembly according to claim 12 , wherein each said stabilizing support member is adapted and dimensioned to rest across the patient's cheek and to extend towards the temple region of the patient in use, an upper portion of each said stabilizing support member including an integrally formed slot to receive said a respective one of said flexible straps. 15. A patient interface assembly according to claim 12 , wherein the stabilizing support member is stiffer in a second direction generally orthogonal to the first direction to resist vertical rotation of the nasal cushion due to the weight of the cushion support structure and/or of components attached to the cushion support structure. 16. A patient interface assembly according to claim 15 , wherein a top end of each said stabilizing support structure includes a connector element adapted to connect with the strap assembly. 17. A patient interface assembly according to claim 16 , wherein each said flexible strap includes a substantially Y-shaped portion. 18. A patient interface assembly according to claim 12 , wherein the elbow is configured to be removed from the frame without accessing an interior portion of the frame. 19. A patient interface assembly according to claim 12 , wherein engagement between the elbow and the frame makes an audible sound. 20. A patient interface assembly according to claim 12 , wherein each said stabilizing support member is adapted and dimensioned to rest across the patient's cheek and to extend towards the temple region of the patient in use, an upper portion of each said stabilizing support member including a slot to receive a respective one of said pair of flexible straps; wherein each said stabilizing support member is stiffer in a second direction generally orthogonal to the first direction to resist vertical rotation of the cushion due to the weight of the cushion support structure and/or of components attached to the cushion support structure; wherein the flexible strap includes a substantially Y-shaped portion; wherein the elbow is configured to be removed from the frame without accessing an interior portion of the frame; and wherein engagement between the elbow and the frame makes an audible sound. 21. A patient interface device for CPAP therapy of a patient, the patient interface device comprising: a frame with a central aperture; at least one cushion attached to the frame and adapted to provide pressurized breathable gas elevated above atmospheric to the patient during sleep; a
