Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A closure system may secure a first bone portion to a second bone portion. The closure system may include a bracket, a band and a tensioning device. The bracket may include a first portion adapted to engage the first bone portion and a second portion adapted to engage the second bone portion. The band may engage the bracket and may be adapted to be looped around the first and second bone portions. The tensioning device may include a body and a threaded member. The threaded member may be received in the body and may engage the band such that rotation of the threaded member relative to the body moves a first end of the band relative to a second end of the band.

What is claimed is: 1. A closure system for securing a first bone portion to a second bone portion, the closure system comprising: a bracket including a first bracket portion configured to engage the first bone portion and a second bracket portion configured to engage the second bone portion; cerclage engaging the bracket and configured to be looped around the first and second bone portions; and a tensioning device configured to engage the cerclage to move a first end of the cerclage relative to a second end of the cerclage; wherein the tensioning device includes a body and a threaded member, the threaded member received in the body and engaging the cerclage such that rotation of the threaded member relative to the body moves a first end of the cerclage relative to a second end of the cerclage. 2. The closure system of claim 1 , wherein an outer member is molded over the cerclage. 3. The closure system of claim 1 , wherein the cerclage comprises a band. 4. The closure system of claim 1 , wherein the bracket comprises a body and a plurality of legs extending from the body. 5. The closure system of claim 4 , wherein the body defines a window through which the cerclage extends, the window configured to receive a cutting device for cutting the cerclage. 6. The closure system of claim 4 , wherein a bottom surface of the body is raised relative to a bottom surface of each of the plurality of legs, such that when the closure system is implanted the plurality of legs contact the first and second bone portions and the body is distanced from the first and second bone portions. 7. The closure system of claim 1 , wherein the bracket fixedly engages the first end of the cerclage prior to implantation of the closure system. 8. The closure system of claim 1 , wherein the cerclage includes a plurality of apertures configured to engage the tensioning device. 9. The closure system of claim 1 , further comprising a cam member that is movable relative to the bracket between a first position allowing movement of the cerclage relative to the bracket and a second position restricting movement of the cerclage relative to the bracket. 10. The closure system of claim 1 , wherein the tensioning device is removable from the bracket and the cerclage without releasing tension of the cerclage. 11. A closure system for securing a first bone portion to a second bone portion, the closure system comprising: a bracket configured to engage at least one of the first and second bone portions; a cerclage engaging the bracket and configured to be looped around the first and second bone portions; and a tensioning device configured to tension the cerclage relative to the first and second bone portions; wherein the tensioning device includes a body and a threaded member, the threaded member received in the body and engaging the cerclage such that rotation of the threaded member relative to the body moves a first end of the cerclage relative to a second end of the cerclage. 12. The closure system of claim 11 , wherein an outer member is molded over or formed integrally with the cerclage. 13. The closure system of claim 11 , wherein the bracket comprises a body and a plurality of legs extending from the body. 14. The closure system of claim 13 , wherein the body defines a window configured to receive a cutting device, such that the cutting device can cut the cerclage. 15. The closure system of claim 13 , wherein a bottom surface of the body is raised relative to a bottom surface of at least one leg of the plurality of legs, such that when the closure system is implanted the bottom surface of the at least one leg contacts at least one of the first and second bone portions with the bottom surface of the body spaced apart from the first and second bone portions. 16. The closure system of claim 11 , wherein the cerclage is coupled to the bracket. 17. A closure system for securing a first bone portion to a second bone portion, the closure system comprising: a bracket configured to engage at least one of the first and second bone portions; a cerclage engaging the bracket and configured to be looped around the first and second bone portions; an outer member covering at least a portion of the cerclage; and a tensioning device configured to tension the cerclage relative to the first and second bone portions; wherein the tensioning device includes a body and a threaded member, the threaded member received in the body and engaging the cerclage such that rotation of the threaded member relative to the body moves a first end of the cerclage relative to a second end of the cerclage. 18. The closure system of claim 17 , wherein: the bracket comprises a body, and a plurality of legs extending from the body; and a bottom surface of the body is raised relative to a bottom surface of at least one leg of the plurality of legs, such that when the closure system is implanted the bottom surface of the at least one leg contacts at least one of the first and second bone portions and the bottom surface of the body is spaced apart from the first and second bone portions. 19. The closure system of claim 17 , wherein the cerclage is coupled to the bracket.
