An endpoint element of a distributed antenna system includes processing circuitry configured for processing a plurality of digital signals for conditioning the signals and compression circuitry configured for compressing at least one of the digital signals according to a compression scheme to yield at least one compressed digital signal and compression settings. The digital signals are combined into a single digital stream and combined and time division multiplexed onto a serial data link with the compression settings. The digital signals are also transmitted with compression settings to another endpoint element over the serial data link.

What is claimed is: 1. An endpoint element of a distributed antenna system having multiple endpoints coupled together by serial data links, comprising: circuitry configured to process and provide a plurality of digital data signals, including a first digital data signal having first data and a second digital data signal having second data; circuitry configured to evaluate the first digital data signal and second digital data signal and perform a determination of similarities between the first digital data signal and the second digital data signal; circuitry configured to substitute other data for at least some of the second data of the second digital data signal based on the determination of similarities; circuitry configured to combine the first digital data signal and the second digital data signal with the other data onto a serial data link; circuitry configured to transmit the combined digital data signals to another endpoint element over the serial data link. 2. The endpoint element of claim 1 wherein the circuitry configured to evaluate the first digital data signal and second digital data signal and perform the determination of similarities between the first digital data signal and the second digital data signal comprises correlation circuitry. 3. The endpoint element of claim 1 further comprising a switch controller configured to control the substitution of other data in place of the at least some of the second data of the second digital data signal. 4. The endpoint element of claim 1 wherein the circuitry configured to combine the first digital data signal and the second digital data signal with the other data onto a serial data link comprises multiplexing circuitry. 5. The endpoint element of claim 1 further comprising data flow control circuitry configured to control the substitution of other data onto the serial data link. 6. The endpoint element of claim 5 wherein the data flow control circuitry is further configured to adjust the amount of other data that is substituted based on an amount of data reduction associated with the first and second digital data signals based on the determination of similarities. 7. The endpoint element of claim 5 further comprising memory configured to store the other data, the data flow control circuitry operably coupled with the memory and configured to control the substitution of other data. 8. The endpoint element of claim 7 wherein the memory is configured to buffer the other data before it is substituted onto the serial data link. 9. The endpoint element of claim 1 further comprising compression circuitry configured to compress the data associated with the first and second digital data signals for reducing the amount of data. 10. The endpoint element of claim 1 further comprising circuitry configured to selectively substitute the other data for at least some data associated with the first and second digital data signals independent of the determination of similarities between the first and second digital data signals. 11. The endpoint element of claim 1 wherein the first and second digital data signals are MIMO signals and the other data substituted for at least some of the second data is non-MIMO data. 12. The endpoint element of claim 1 wherein the endpoint element is one of a master unit or a remote unit of a distributed antenna system. 13. A method of transmitting data between endpoint elements of a distributed antenna system over a serial data link, comprising: processing, at one endpoint, a plurality of digital data signals including a first digital data signal having first data and a second digital data signal having second data; evaluating the first digital data signal and the second digital data signal and performing a determination of similarities between the first digital data signal and the second digital data signal; substituting other data for at least some of the second data based on the determination of similarities; combining the first digital data signal and the second digital data signal with the other data onto a serial data link; transmitting the combined digital data signals to another endpoint element over the serial data link. 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising using correlation for evaluating the first and second digital data signals and performing a determination of similarities between the signals. 15. The method of claim 13 further comprising multiplexing the first digital data signal and the second digital data signal with other data onto a serial data link and controlling the substitution of other data for at least some of the second data. 16. The method of claim 13 further comprising adjusting the amount of other data that is substituted based on an amount of the data reduction associated with the first and second digital data signals based on the determination of similarities. 17. The method of claim 13 further comprising storing the other data in memory and controlling the substitution of the other data through the memory. 18. The method of claim 17 further comprising buffering the other data in memory before it is substituted onto the serial data link. 19. The method of claim 13 further comprising compressing the data associated with the first and second digital data signals for reducing the amount of data. 20. The method of claim 13 further comprising selectively substituting other data in place of data associated with the first and second digital data signals independent of a determination of similarities between the first and second digital data signals.
