Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of manufacturing a shaft of a surgical instrument including forming a proximal segment of the shaft to include one or more features for operably engaging the shaft to a first component of the surgical instrument, forming a distal segment of the shaft to include one or more features for operably engaging the shaft to a second component of the surgical instrument and forming an intermediate segment of the shaft. The proximal segment is welded to a proximal end of the intermediate segment; and the distal segment is welded to a distal end of the intermediate segment. The proximal and distal segments are welded to the intermediate segment such that the one or more features thereof are aligned in a pre-determined orientation relative to one another.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of manufacturing a component of a surgical instrument, comprising: providing a first section including a first feature for operably engaging the component to a first portion of the surgical instrument; providing a second section including a second feature for operably engaging the component to a second portion of the surgical instrument; providing a third section; welding the first section to the third section; and welding the second section to the third section, wherein the welding of at least one of the first section or the second section to the third section is controlled such that when the first and second sections are welded to the third section, the first and second features are positioned in a pre-determined orientation relative to one another. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first section or the second section is welded to the third section via laser welding. 3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first section or the second section is welded to the third section via spin-welding. 4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the welding of the first section to the third section and the welding of the second section to the third section are controlled via clocking the first and second sections to one another to orient the first and second features in the pre-determined orientation relative to one another. 5. A method of manufacturing a component of a surgical instrument, comprising: providing a first section including a first feature for operably engaging the component to a first portion of the surgical instrument; providing a second section including a second feature for operably engaging the component to a second portion of the surgical instrument; providing a third section; joining the first section to the third section; and joining the second section to the third section, wherein the first and second sections are clocked to one another during the joining of at least one of the first section or the second section to the third section such that when the first and second sections are joined to the third section, the first and second features are positioned in a pre-determined orientation relative to one another. 6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein at least one of the first section or the second section is joined to the third section via welding. 7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the welding is performed via spin-welding. 8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the welding is performed via laser welding. 9. A method of manufacturing a component of a surgical instrument, comprising: providing a first section including a first feature for operably engaging the component to a first portion of the surgical instrument; providing a second section including a second feature for operably engaging the component to a second portion of the surgical instrument; providing a third section; and simultaneously joining the first and second sections to the third section, wherein the joining of the first and second sections to the third section is controlled such that when the first and second sections are joined to the third section, the first and second features are positioned in a pre-determined orientation relative to one another. 10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein at least one of the first section or the second section is joined to the third section via welding. 11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the welding is performed via laser welding. 12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the welding is performed via spin-welding. 13. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the simultaneous joining of the first and second sections to the third section is controlled via clocking the first and second sections to one another to orient the first and second features in the pre-determined orientation relative to one another.
