Official abstract text for this publication.
A temperature measurement system includes a temperature probe including a temperature sensor. The system also includes a reader, and a controller in communication with the temperature sensor and the reader. The system further includes a container housing a plurality of probe covers associated with the temperature probe. The container includes an information feature providing information related to the plurality of probe covers. The reader is configured to read the information and direct a signal to the controller indicative of the information.

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: providing an information feature at a predetermined location on a container, the container storing a plurality of probe covers configured for use with a temperature probe of a temperature measurement system such that at least one probe cover of the plurality of probe covers contacts a bottom surface of the container; providing a receptacle separate from the container, the receptacle including a compartment having an interior space, wherein the receptacle is configured to removably retain at least a portion of the container within the interior space; and providing a reader configured to read information from the information feature when the information feature is proximate the reader, the information of the information feature being indicative of a characteristic of the plurality of probe covers, wherein the temperature probe is configured to estimate a core temperature of a patient based on the information read by the reader and a sensed temperature of the patient. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information feature comprises at least one of a label providing the information and text providing the information. 3. The method of claim 1 , further including providing one of pattern recognition software and identification software operable to assist the reader in reading the information provided by the information feature. 4. The method of claim 3 , further including providing a controller employing the one of the pattern recognition software and identification software, the controller assisting in estimating the core temperature of the patient based on the information read by the reader and the sensed temperature. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to control operation of the temperature probe based on the information read by the reader. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to determine whether the at least one of the container and the plurality of probe covers is a product of an acceptable manufacturer based on the information, and to disable the temperature probe in response to determining that the at least one of the container and the plurality of probe covers is not a product of the acceptable manufacturer. 7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to determine whether the at least one of the container and the plurality of probe covers is a product of an acceptable manufacturer based on the information, and to activate an additional component of the temperature probe in response to determining that the at least one of the container and the plurality of probe covers is a product of the acceptable manufacturer. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interior space comprises a substantially enclosed interior space accessible via an opening of the compartment, the bottom surface extends substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the at least one probe cover, and the receptacle is configured to removably retain substantially the entire container within the interior space when at least a bottom of the container defining the bottom surface is passed through the opening. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reader comprises a component of the temperature probe in communication with a controller of the temperature probe. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic comprises one of a thickness, a transmissivity, a material composition, a manufacture date, a lot number, a manufacture location, a manufacturer name, and a probe cover type. 11. The method of claim 1 , further including providing a controller configured to modify operation of the temperature probe based on the information read from the information feature at the predetermined location. 12. A method, comprising: providing an information feature at a predetermined location on a container, the container storing a plurality of covers configured for use with a medical device such that at least one probe cover of the plurality of probe covers contacts a bottom surface of the container; providing a receptacle separate from the container, the receptacle including a compartment having an interior space, wherein the receptacle is configured to removably retain at least a portion of the container within the interior space; and providing a reader configured to read information from the information feature when the information feature is proximate the reader, the information of the information feature being indicative of a characteristic of the plurality of covers, wherein a measurement based on data gathered from a patient is impacted by the information read by the reader. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined location of the information feature affects the information read by the reader. 14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reader is configured to read information from the information feature while each probe cover of the plurality of probe covers is disposed within the container. 15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reader is configured to read information from the information feature prior to mounting a probe cover of the plurality of probe covers onto the temperature probe. 16. The method of claim 1 , wherein each probe cover of the plurality of probe covers is disposed within the container at a second location different from the predetermined location on the container, such that the reader reads the information at the predetermined location different from the second location. 17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature probe is configured to estimate the core temperature of the patient by using the information read from the information feature as an input to core temperature algorithm. 18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the container is openable to access the plurality of probe covers. 19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reader comprises an electronic reader. 20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined location including the information feature consists of a first portion of a surface of the container, and wherein the first portion of the surface is different from a second portion of the surface that is free of the information feature. 21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reader is connected to the temperature probe. 22. The method of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the at least one probe cover contacts the bottom surface of the container while the at least one probe cover is stored within the container. 23. The method of claim 8 , wherein the information feature is positioned on the container such that the information feature passes at least partially within a sensing range of the reader when the container is inserted into the compartment, and wherein the reader is disposed on one of the temperature probe and the receptacle. 24. The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature probe is configured to estimate the core temperature of the patient by using the information of the information feature as an input into a temperature calculation algorithm. 25. The method of claim 8 , wherein the reader is disposed on the receptacle.
