Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An accent lighting source utilizes a light source having a metal heat dissipating housing with an aperture within which at least one point light source, such as from an LED, is mounted. The aperture is closed by a lens/diffuser structure. The light source is mounted within a housing for the accent light source. The housing has a design configuration that supports one or more of a preferred accent lighting installation on a horizontal or vertical surface. Exemplary horizontal surfaces include the top of a post member, a deck surface, a stair surface or an overhanging or ceiling surface. Exemplary vertical surfaces include a stair riser and the side of post or wall surface.

What is claimed is: 1. A lighting apparatus, comprising: a cylindrical light refracting member having a first end presenting a light emitting surface and a second end, the light emitting surface defining a central portion and a peripheral portion; wherein the first end of the cylindrical light refracting member comprises a solid region; wherein the second end of the cylindrical light refracting member comprises a hollow region surrounded by a peripheral side wall and an open region disposed below the hollow region and defined by an inside shoulder surface and the peripheral side wall, a diameter of the open region being greater than a diameter of the hollow region; a conical extension projects rearwardly from the solid region into the hollow region; wherein the conical extension includes a central bore; a lighting source installed within the open region and configured to emit light towards the central bore of the conical extension; wherein the central portion of the light emitting surface is disposed in axial alignment with the central bore and is coplanar and continuous with the peripheral portion; wherein the first end of the cylindrical light refracting member comprises an upper peripheral shoulder surface, the peripheral portion disposed radially between the upper peripheral shoulder surface and the central portion; and wherein the cylindrical light refracting member further comprises a lower peripheral shoulder surface disposed axially beneath and radially outside the upper peripheral shoulder surface. 2. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light emitting surface has a plurality of dimples. 3. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , further including a cylindrical wall extending rearwardly from the conical extension, said cylindrical wall defining at least a portion of the central bore. 4. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the conical extension defines a conical outer surface present within the hollow region. 5. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the central bore is cylindrical. 6. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the central bore is conical. 7. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a cylindrical housing having an opening and being configured to receive and enclose the lighting source and the cylindrical light refracting member, the upper peripheral shoulder surface mating with a portion of the housing peripheral to the opening. 8. The lighting apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the cylindrical housing has a front end, and wherein the light emitting surface of the cylindrical light refracting member is flush with said front end. 9. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical light refracting member is a single unitary body. 10. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the central bore is cylindrical and delimited by an upper surface and a cylindrical surface, and wherein the central portion of the light emitting surface is parallel to the upper surface delimiting the central bore. 11. A lighting system, comprising: a housing; a light source; a lens disposed within the housing and adapted to diffuse light emitted by the light source to illuminate a top surface of the lens, the lens comprising a cylindrical portion defining the top surface and a conical portion extending from the cylindrical portion toward the light source, the conical portion defining a central cylindrical bore extending through the conical portion, the central cylindrical bore delimited by an upper surface and a cylindrical surface; wherein a central portion of the top surface of the lens is disposed axially aligned with and parallel to the upper surface delimiting the central cylindrical bore; and wherein the lens comprises an upper peripheral shoulder surface, a lower peripheral shoulder surface, and an inside shoulder surface facing away from the top surface of the lens, the lower peripheral shoulder surface disposed axially beneath and radially outside the upper peripheral shoulder surface, the inside shoulder surface providing a mounting surface for the light source. 12. The lighting system of claim 11 , further comprising an annular portion extending from the conical portion, the annular portion defining at least part of the central cylindrical bore. 13. The lighting system of claim 11 , wherein the housing is generally cylindrical. 14. The lighting system of claim 11 , wherein the light source comprises a light emitting diode. 15. The lighting system of claim 11 wherein the top surface of the lens comprises a plurality of dimples. 16. The lighting system of claim 11 , wherein the conical portion defines a conical outer surface. 17. A lighting apparatus, comprising: a cylindrical light refracting member having a first end presenting a light emitting surface and a second end; wherein the first end of the cylindrical light refracting member comprises a solid region; wherein the second end of the cylindrical light refracting member comprises a hollow region surrounded by a peripheral side wall and an open region disposed below the hollow region and defined by an inside shoulder surface and the peripheral side wall, a diameter of the open region being greater than a diameter of the hollow region; a conical extension projects from the solid region into the hollow region; wherein the conical extension includes a central cylindrical bore, the central cylindrical bore delimited by an upper surface; a lighting source installed within the open region and configured to emit light towards the central cylindrical bore of the conical extension; wherein a central portion of the light emitting surface is disposed axially aligned with and parallel to the upper surface delimiting the central cylindrical bore; wherein the cylindrical light refracting member comprises an upper peripheral shoulder surface and a lower peripheral shoulder surface disposed axially beneath and radially outside the upper peripheral shoulder surface. 18. The lighting system of claim 17 wherein the light emitting surface comprises a plurality of dimples. 19. The lighting apparatus of claim 17 wherein the conical extension defines a conical outer surface. 20. The lighting apparatus of claim 17 further including a cylindrical wall extending from the conical extension, said cylindrical wall defining at least a portion of the central cylindrical bore. 21. The lighting apparatus of claim 17 wherein the cylindrical light refracting member is a single unitary body.
