A fastener including a chisel point that pre-bores a hole in a work piece to prevent damage to the work piece as the fastener advances. The fastener can include a head, a shaft and a chisel brake point formed at an end of the shaft. The chisel brake point can include first and second opposing inclined surfaces disposed at an angle of about 80° to about 150° relative to one another. A thread can begin adjacent the chisel brake point and form an extension of an inclined surface and/or a chisel edge. The chisel brake point can scrape material from a work piece while pre-boring a hole. The material can be transferred to the thread, and subsequently fed up the thread, out of the pre-bored hole. The chisel brake point can also selectively retard advancement of the fastener into the work piece. Methods of installing the fastener also are provided.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A method of installing a fastener comprising: providing a fastener including a shaft having an outer diameter and a thread that coils around the shaft and terminates adjacent a chisel edge, which is substantially linear and extends from a first side of the outer diameter toward a second side of the outer diameter, the chisel edge formed at the intersection of a first inclined surface and a second inclined surface, the thread including a leading portion that merges into and projects outwardly from only the first inclined surface, without the thread wrapping to the second inclined surface, the thread configured to advance the fastener at a theoretical feed rate as the fastener rotates; aligning the fastener along an axis of advancement, the axis disposed at an angle relative to a side surface of a first work piece, the axis aligned to traverse a bottom surface of the first work piece, and a top surface of a second work piece positioned adjacent the first work piece, the side surface and bottom surface of the first work piece joining at a corner; rotating the fastener to advance the fastener within the first work piece, wherein the chisel edge retards advancement of the fastener in the first work piece to a second feed rate that is less than the theoretical feed rate; pre-boring a hole with the chisel edge of the fastener in the first work piece with the fastener advancing at the second feed rate that is less than the theoretical feed rate within the first work piece for a preselected distance, removing with the leading portion of the thread and the chisel edge material from the pre-bored hole and feeding the material along the first inclined surface to the leading portion and up the thread, out of the pre-bored hole, adjacent the fastener shaft, said pre-boring reducing the likelihood of at least one of splitting the corner from the first work piece and damaging the first work piece in an area surrounding the axis; overcoming the retarding of the advancement of the fastener by engaging the threads with the pre-bored hole so that the fastener advances at a third feed rate that is greater than the second feed rate; and joining the first work piece and the second work with the fastener piece. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the chisel edge is void of a self tapping groove and discontinuity in the form of a flute. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the first and second inclined surfaces form a V-shape, wherein the chisel edge extends across a majority of the outer diameter of the shaft, wherein the first and second inclined surfaces are disposed at an angle of about 90° to about 150° relative to one another to cause the chisel edge to remove material from the pre-bored hole. 4. The method of claim 1 comprising: holding the fastener on the axis with an installation tool and rotating the fastener with a drive tool, wherein the fastener is a screw, wherein the first work piece is a deck board, and wherein the second work piece is a joist. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the threads are configured to advance the fastener so that a head of the fastener engages the first work piece in less than about 15 rotations of the fastener about the axis, but wherein the fastener is rotated about the axis for at least about 25 rotations of the fastener before the head engages the first work piece, due to the chisel edge retarding advancement of the fastener in at least the first work piece. 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the chisel edge is formed by at least one inclined surface, the inclined surface forming a negative rake angle, wherein during said pre-boring step at least one of the inclined surface and the chisel edge forcibly scrapes material from a bottom of the pre-bored hole via a scraping action. 7. A method of installing a screw to secure a board to an underlying joist, the method comprising: providing a board including a top surface laying in a first plane, a bottom surface opposite the top surface and parallel to the top surface, the bottom surface laying in a second plane, and a side surface laying in a third plane, the third plane being substantially perpendicular to the first plane and the second plane, the side surface joined with the top surface and the bottom surface; placing the bottom surface of the board over an underlying joist; aligning a screw along an advancement axis at an angle relative to and non-orthogonal with the third plane of the side surface of the board, the advancement axis passing through the first plane, the second plane and the third plane, the screw including a screw axis, a shaft, and a thread that coils around the shaft and toward a chisel edge, the chisel edge extending transverse to the screw axis, at least two inclined surfaces intersecting at the chisel edge, the inclined surfaces being disposed at an angle of about 90° to about 150° relative to one another, the thread configured to advance the fastener at a theoretical feed rate; rotating the screw so that the chisel edge penetrates the side surface of the board; pre-boring a hole with the chisel edge in the board along the advancement axis, at least a portion of the thread scooping material from the pre-bored hole and augering the material up the thread out of the pre-bored hole; advancing the fastener along the advancement axis at a second feed rate that is less than the theoretical feed rate in at least a portion of the board, with the chisel edge retarding the advancing so that the fastener advances at the second feed rate for a preselected distance between the side surface and bottom surface of the board; penetrating the bottom surface of the board with the chisel edge; penetrating a surface of the underlying joist; advancing the fastener along the advancement axis at a third feed rate that is greater than the second feed rate into the underlying joist, the threads overcoming at least a portion of the retarding of advancing provided by the chisel edge by engaging the pre-bored hole and material surrounding the pre-bored hole; and ceasing the advancing when the screw is substantially positioned in the pre-bored hole and joins the board to the underlying joist, wherein the thread includes a leading portion positioned adjacent at least one of the opposing inclined surfaces, wherein the leading portion scoops material from a bottom of the pre-bored hole and transfers the material to a remainder of the thread so that the material is augered out of the pre-bored hole, wherein the leading portion includes a forward surface adjacent the chisel edge, wherein the leading portion forms an extension of the chisel edge so that the chisel edge is asymmetric about the screw axis. 8. A method of installing a screw to secure a board to an underlying joist, the method comprising: providing a board including a top surface laying in a first plane, a bottom surface opposite the top surface and parallel to the top surface, the bottom surface laying in a second plane, and a side surface laying in a third plane, the third plane being substantially perpendicular to the first plane and the second plane, the side surface joined with the top surface and the bottom surface; placing the bottom surface of the board over an underlying joist; aligning a screw along an advancement axis at an angle relative to and non-orthogonal with the third plane of the side surface of the board, the advancement axis passing through the first plane, the second plane and the third plane, the screw including a screw axis, a shaft, and a thread that coils around the shaft and toward a chisel edge, the chisel edge extending transverse to the screw axis, at least two inclined surfaces interse
